Just a thought.........
« on: February 22, 2009, 07:15:57 AM »
I thought of this while watching the plastic ball championship.  Another way to put emphasis on versatility and strategy would be a one ball tournament in which you could select any ball, any layout, or any surface, the only catch is that ball must be used for every delivery of the tournament.  No surface changes once tournament play begins.  This way all manufacturers could still be represented and the bowler's versatility would be displayed not the vesatility of his/her arsenal.  Any thoughts?

I think it is a good idea. To have a little even playing field the PBA would have to look at equipment from all companies and find ones that were close to each other from all companies. Just a thought have them use something like the Tornado's or Power Groove's something like that.

I can see that my point is already being misinterpreted a little.  The equipment choice is that of the bowler.  Which is why strategy would be imortant.  If they want to have to shoot spares with a hook monster or bowl on a fresh condition with a less hooking ball and wait for them to break down to make a move it is their choice.

A youth tour I used to be a part of in North Carolina, just ran a tournament on this concept and was received very well. The bowlers were made aware of the condition a couple of days before so they could think about their ball choice but come registration time, it was time to put the ball down on your entry form. I believe they were only allowed to bring one ball into the center with the to assure no one was going back to their bags to get a duplicate ball (same ball different layout) or so no one would go back outside to get another ball in between games..

The strategy side of it was interesting as they bowled on a 42-43 ft pattern which presented the question of planning for fresh or planning for later.. visit victoryzonebowling.com and check out the youth tough shots tour forum for their thoughts and results on the event.

If a youth tour could do it with no problems, I am sure the big boys could pull it off

Cool idea for youth.  Too many young kids these days feel like they NEED 7-8 different balls to compete.  Stuff like this is nice to empasize the fact that being bale to alter your game is just as important.  The PBA on the other hand... ehhh I say let em have 20 balls they obviously have paid their dues and they know what's going on.

i like this idea as well.  i would add the wrinkle of not even announcing the pattern until after everyone has selected their ball of choice.  this way there adds a stronger sense of versatility--for example, if you chose a ball for a longer pattern (shark) but bowl on a shorter pattern (cheetah).  no layout changes allowed, maybe limit surface changes too.

just a thought..
