I LOVE to watch bowling on TV, have for years, even when many people were unhappy with it.
(Sorry, still can't stand Rob Stone and Randy, but Randy sounds better this year so far.)

In any case, except for some adrenaline pumping by Caroline last week, I could almost fast forward thru all 3 shows so far (2 men, last week and today) and last week's women's show.

I'm kind of disappointed. Heck, I'm not even sure what the finalists did to get where they were and WHERE were they? What "championship" was each of these for?

This whole thing is making me sad ... so far.

Low scoring, lower than one sees in mixed leagues with bowlers throwing backup balls with plastic.

"I fell asleep" by the poster above sums up my feelings and my post above.

The PBA has been trying to "educate the public" on how tough the patterns are on the PBA tour, for years as their ratings fell, as their costs to have shows on the air has gone thru the roof.  Low scoring will not help!

Entertaining the public and lots of weeks of high scoring with an occassional major mixed and its tough scoring, that is part of the necessity to raiseTV ratings and save the PBA.

imo the shows are not that good because -- small audience -- not live -- format is not  very good.

I think a part of the problem is the exempt field. Has anyone noticed, since the implementation of the exempt field the tour ratings have gone nose dive. You see the same people over and over again with no additional money coming in from amateurs who would bowl just the chance. That and Chris Barnes in commentary doesn't help either. Open the tour to all bowlers who qualify and regenerate the revenue you've been missing. Just my opinion.

I'm man enough to admit I stroke with the left hand and it feels good.

Whooooooo! Go time!

No excuses. Just bowl. High Score wins! Make the Adjustment!

I also thought the show was boring but Chris Barnes is, in my opinion, a very good commentator.  He knows the game very well from all aspects.  I liked the way he and Randy were discussing how the lanes were breaking down and the moves that the bowlers should be making.  Thought it was great insight.

I do not know if the "Real" PBA will ever make a comeback.  All I know is that if they keep the "Gimmick" maker Clarke in charge, it doesn't have a prayer.

The PBA should cater to the general public who hardly know "oil patterns" exist.  Why not just bowl on easy high ratio patterns and have a high scoring fest?  The funny thing is you guys will complain either way.  When the women played on the 8-1 ratio pattern at the US Open or whatever it was, "serious bowlers" thought it was a joke.

Why make professional bowlers look average?  Of course that will be booooring to the general public, and even some of you guys.  Everyone wants to see 300 games.  All PBA patterns do is give an overwhelming advantage to the previously called "exempt" players, and even they struggle to put up high scores at times with all their experience and resources.

I still don't get the reason for the venue look and feel. Why must it look so generic? When they bowled at South Point all week, why do they build a specific set-up just for TV? No other sport makes such an attempt to whitewash the location like bowling.

I agree about Barnes being able to communicate to us (bowlers). I wonder how he comes across to non-bowlers (that is, if any are watching at all any more)?

I think Randy actually played the straight technical man in this show. I wonder if it was because he was playing off Barnes or Barnes was making him the technical advisor he's supposed to me. I heard a lot less of those smart comments that he makes to make people think he is witty. He knows the game well; he should show it. He can communicate when he wants to or someone makes him.

You cant have a technical conversation when one commentator doesnt have a clue about the technical aspect of the game.  Id like to see barnes and pederson on a weekly basis.  That would be too much information though for the casual bowler.

Plus I think Barnes will make more than a few shows and would prefer to be bowling than talking.

here is a real simple formula.

Strikes + pressure = excitement.

i dont see anything wrng in softening up the tv show a bit just to make it a bit of a freakshow.  instead of making it impossible, maybe a 4:1 so they have a few more to work with but not be full blown walled up.

That's what I do not like about the PBA as such, too. True, the exempt status is something to strive for for bowlers who can hardly make a living from the money they earn on the tour. But at the same time it bores me to death to see the same people over and over again, even if it is good sport. But I'd personally like to see more and different faces.

We have the same problem here in Germany, too. I can watch PBA telecasts every now and then on a private sport TV channel, lagging behind half a year or so. They used to have a young commentator, but with hardly a clue about technical aspects that are not plain to the eye. Since last year, though, they took a top amatuer player as co-commentator (accidently the man who drills my equipment), and this has really enriched the comments. Not that there's in-depth details, but you get hints at ball or line changes, poor releases, poor carry or pinfall, plus an entertaining buddy-style commentary. A real improvement.
