The PBA Needs To Be More Dark & Mean
« on: October 24, 2008, 12:37:57 AM »
I saw PBA's commercial yesterday advertising this week's tournament with Norm Duke wearing something from the 1960's as a hippie with dreadlocks and throwing a ball equally nostalgic.

The PBA should follow the NFL with commercials like Under Armour (we must protect this house), or commercials that show LT running through a team at night.  Every commercial the PBA puts out seems like the actors and possibly the film crew don't take bowling seriously as a product.  Every commercial or ad it seems only highlights and further cements bowling as a sport by dorks and boring people.

Hell, even parody themes from old Good, Bad, and the Ugly movies and just show their eyes in a sequence that is similar to something manly in film like Clint Eastwood.  Or parody Terminator or something.  These lame commercials that almost poke fun of how lame and dorky the sport's athletes are just make me mad.

Also, bowlers like Danny Wiseman with his flaming shirts (good bowler and like him a lot), doesn't help either.

Also, it would be nice to have the uniform policy significantly changed.  Even though Danny Wiseman wearing flaming shirts and pants, at least he is different and that sets his character.  Everyone else needs to be their character too.  In league bowling, you don't see 50 bowlers all wearing khakis and a plain polo.  I mean Jesus Christ!  Like in poker, everyone has their own unique style.

So I want to see people wear wife-beaters - because I see that in league play.
I want to see someone with jeans and a t-shirt - because I see that in league play.
Have someone wear a suit or tuxedo.
Another in sweat pants and a football jersey.

Let's get unique!

Umm there's a PBA dress code:

While competing in all PBA events the following guidelines must be adhered to during the practice session and all phases of competition. During PBA Tour events these guidelines must be adhered to at all times while in the center:

• Jeans, draw strings or parachute type pants may not be worn during competition.

• Shorts may not be worn during competition.

• T-Shirts may not be worn during competition.

• Earrings are permitted as long as they are in good taste.

• Items that hang or protrude from apparel may not be worn in competition.

• Hats may not be worn during competition.

• If a shirt is tucked into pants with belt loops, a belt must be worn.

• Any shirt that does not button down top to bottom must be tucked in.

• While in competition, your last name (first names are optional) must appear in permanently attached letters at least two (2) inches high in the central back area of the shirt.

• The back of the shirt (yoke) is reserved for PBA logo use (no fashion logos are allowed).

sorry, I do not want to see professionals wearing wife beaters, jeans, t-shirts, and the like...just because guys wear that in non-professional leagues, doesn't mean it has to be carried over...that's why there is a difference between professional and amateur...I wouldn't want to see Major League Baseball players wearing the kind of stuff guys in a beer softball league would, nor NBA players wearing  what guys would in a pickup game or rec league...same thing applies with bowling...

I can't say those ideas are saving the PBA necro,  the new jersey's that are offered this year are a step in the right direction.  It will add more individuality as necro is suggesting while staying professional.

Cool.  Yeah I know the PBA needs to keep some of what makes it the PBA, but change is what improves sports.  All the sports changed from 20-30 years ago.  The biggest change the PBA ever tried was actually 2:

-The gold pins that weighed a little bit more back in the 90's early 2000's (overall idea was ok, but why the hell they were gold is beyond me)

-The standard patterns that are out now that weren't available in the 70's and 80's.

Other than that not much else has changed.  The bowling audience is still the same.  The scoring is the same.  The lane designs haven't improved much.  Clothing is the same.

I mean basketball added a 3 point line, made traveling legal for the most part, and made the game much more physical.

Football changed bigtime with 2 point conversions, tackling is weaker now, the forward pass, etc.

Bowling is still 10 frames, lanes are still 60 feet long, surface is still the same for the most part, the pins are the same.

Traveling is still illegal they just choose not to enforce the rule.

So, bad tackling is good for the game...?

I was just showing how both sports changed in relation to bowling.  Yeah traveling is illegal, but I did it, college players did it, NBA players do it.  Basketball just gradually got refereed more leniently and you can't say it didn't improve the game.  Imagine Jordan not being able to take 2-3 steps before dunks or layups.

Football is just becoming a pansy game LOL.  But used for example in this thread.  I hate how every tackle that is hard is fined.  Screw that.  That ain't football, that is flag football.

But yeah, swimming made the water deeper which creates faster times.

Track improved by giving runners better shoes, lighter clothes.

Baseball improved by allowing steroids which resulted in more HR's.

Soccer improved by creating arena soccer.

The list goes on.  Bowling is still in the 1980's but with balls that break the game.

I'm not getting your logic at all.  Almost every single "improvement" you've listed is either not an improvement (steroids in baseball), or is a technology advancement just like better bowling balls than we used to have.

You keep making suggestions about lots of things, and I keep vehemently disagreeing with every bit of your logic about anything and everything related to bowling.  Why is that??

I agree with how you want to make changes for the better to the PBA so people can become more interested, right? Bowling won't change things such as the lanes being 60 feet to the head pin, or how the scores being calculated in 10 frames. I think the Chris Paul tournament was good advertising for the PBA and we will see where it leads to this season.

I agree.  I've believed for a long time that they should ban all pads and helmets in football.  I think it will actually reduce injuries and make the game a whole lot more interesting for viewers.

Yeah Bears coach Mike Dikta said they should take face masks off.  I doubt those primadonnas would go head first into anyone ever again.  It would be cool if they decreased the padding.  Of course, no one on Earth is going to play without a jock strap and cup LOL.
