The PBA Needs To Be More Dark & Mean
« on: October 24, 2008, 12:37:57 AM »
I saw PBA's commercial yesterday advertising this week's tournament with Norm Duke wearing something from the 1960's as a hippie with dreadlocks and throwing a ball equally nostalgic.

The PBA should follow the NFL with commercials like Under Armour (we must protect this house), or commercials that show LT running through a team at night.  Every commercial the PBA puts out seems like the actors and possibly the film crew don't take bowling seriously as a product.  Every commercial or ad it seems only highlights and further cements bowling as a sport by dorks and boring people.

Hell, even parody themes from old Good, Bad, and the Ugly movies and just show their eyes in a sequence that is similar to something manly in film like Clint Eastwood.  Or parody Terminator or something.  These lame commercials that almost poke fun of how lame and dorky the sport's athletes are just make me mad.

Also, bowlers like Danny Wiseman with his flaming shirts (good bowler and like him a lot), doesn't help either.

Ok no one is understanding me LOL.  Doing the thug thing or rap thing only makes them look like bigger dorks.  I don't need to see Norm Duke wearing baggy jeans and a white tee trying to act hardcore.  He is like 150lbs and definately not hardcore.

More suggestions:

-Have each bowler have their own theme song like WWE does
-Improve the filming of bowling like ESPN-360-HD camera technology did with football.  The split screen stuff is too old-school.
-After a strike, play their theme song.  Similar to when a wrestler wins a match, they play his/hers.
-Have promos.  That would be tight.  Have one bowler talking about how he is going to destroy the other.  Not sure why everyone is so nice to each other and patting each other's butts.  In my league, everyone is talking trash.  I don't say anything to anyone else but I talk to the pins - usually with cuss words.
-Have commentary by the bowlers that are coming up like have Tommy Jones say, "man Duke sucks, I'm gonna show him".  At least that is what I would say hehe.

1) HD cameras are expensive, that's why they aren't using them.
2) The rest of that is garbage.  Are you really expecting more people to watch because of stupid kiddie crap like that?  I cringe when I see stuff like that creeping into any sport.  Cut the excess and let the actual emotion and energy of the event show through.

Cringe?  Man you are no fun.  Music is a staple of the universe like math - constant and forever.  Bowling has 0 music.  You can't even talk during rolls.  The introductions are boring and stupid.  They all come from behind some curtain with fake smoke and all wave to the fans.  I guarantee, if you put Vince McMahon behind a bowling company, that company will blow up big time.  There is money to be made in bowling, its just that you can't see it with the way things are right now.

Back to the topic:

Bowling needs a change, but much of the afore-mentioned radical "evolving", i.e. drawing comparisons to football, basketball and WWE, is just plain looney.

What the game needs are more legit advertisers, maybe some game shows pitting pros against good amateurs, getting bowling back on prime-time TV on major stations, and sure, a different "look" clothing-wise, but definitely not something that's going to make it look thug.  Golf, for instance, still looks professional, but is much better marketed, to say the least.

Necro,

You call me a depressing 50 year old, and just the other day on your birthday you mentioned you were half way to hell, and that you didn't want to reach 50.

Make up your mind dude.

By the way, I don't mind reaching the things I mentioned--they are part of life, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Necromancer, I think you completely misunderstand the limited target audience professional televised bowling has, and the things they look for.  The professional wrestling/MTV audience is not interested in watching bowling!

And for what it's worth, I personally love music, but do not like it during sporting events.  I especially DESPISE the music that's played during the action itself at NBA games for example.

PBA needs McDonald's to sponsor like a fat guy needs a McDonald's big mac.  The McDonald's HS All-star game is sick.  McDonald's or someone similar has the money to turn the PBA around.

It would be cool if the PBA followed the Madden Nation tour or the And 1 street ball tour that allowed a local bowler to actually detrone the current PBA squad.  Like this bowler would get a chance to bowl the champion of the tournament in a 2 game roll-off and if need a third game to decide who gets to stay on the tour and who has to go home.
