Title: The world championships
Post by: mumzie on March 09, 2004, 11:27:54 PM
I was talking with a buddy of mine last night. He's one of the tournament directors for the PBA, and is home for 3 days this week. He has to be back to work tomorrow setting up for the final tournament of the year.

He said that the tension is soooooo high right now that they're thinking of setting up full security for this tournament. I guess they're expecting some problems.

And they say bowlers don't show emotion...

There are a whole bunch of guys who need to make match play in the WC, or they get the "Go straight to Tour Trials" ticket.

If a guy misses the cut with a 10th frame split, and someone on his pair starts whooping it up, I can definitely see the need for a large bouncer or two.

Should make for an interesting week...

i think the pba could have made a boatload of money if they had decided to telecast the match play rounds on espn or something.  the start the exempt tour specifically to create better entertainment, and now only a select few can watch it.  i know theres strikepass and actually being there, but it would have been nice if they had televised it.  i have a feeling alot of very interesting situations will come up throughout the week, and i think there will be some shouting matches all over the lanes.  the smallest thing is going to upset anyone looking to squeeze into next years field, and i would love to see a few players trying to get in have to perform late to stay alive.  i think this week they should keep track of the frame by frame performance of the players "on the bubble", not just their standings after each game.

Tension among whom?

The pros to one another?

Possible terrorism?

Or amongst the fans that will attend?

i dont think terrorism will be an issue this weekend.  neither will fan altercation.  the players themselves will be on edge this week because of what theyre competing for.  you have about 20 spots open still for next years tour, and over 40 that are competing to fill them.  anyone in 40-60 is going to be as tense as theyve ever been on a bowling lane.  the ones on the edge of the cut are going to be trying to hold on, and there are still 5 or 6 guys trying to get player of the year.  i dont think seeing the last 4 games of the tourney this sunday are going to do this weeks tourney justice. that emotion will most likely be gone by sunday, unless someone from out of the top 50 makes the show and has a chance to win or walter ray is bowling pdw for POY in the title match.  i have a feeling that the rounds of the tournament leading up to the telecast are going to be something to remember for anyone watching.  there are over 40 guys that will be competing for careers.

Thanks for the explanation 'hotwire'.

It looks as if this is going to be a very exciting conclusion to a long PBA season. My money is on Pete Weber to win but not for bowler of the year, although if he does win then he will probably get it. I like Mika Kouvuniemi's chances - he has had a solid year - to say the least!!! And then there is always Walter Ray. I guess it is Brad Angelo's time to either shine or fizzle - he is the overall points leader so he can show them all up if he places high enough or ends up winning.  This is going to be an exciting weekend.  And, as you stated, the most excitement won't even be seen by the TV viewer, only the final ladder play, after all the other exempt - and hopefully exempt - players will have fought it out long before the telecast.
Enjoy the tournament!  And again thanks for the explanation!

no problem for the explanation...i guess im so used to a tournament every weekend i didnt realize it was next sunday.  my money is on walter or mika.  i dont think angelo is gonna do it, although he has had by far the most consistent year on tour.  walter's second half has been unmatched, and mika just dominates the lanes once he finds a shot(which is most of the time).  i think being in the top 8 is a huge advantage for this tourney, and i have a feeling that at least 3 of the finalists will come out of the top 8.  as much as i cant stand weber, he is an incredible player, and a win or top 3 finish without losing to mika, angelo, or walter should give him POY.  but ever since his hot streak a few weeks ago that ended with him pulling out after the us open, he hasnt been back to form yet.  personally, i would like to see randy pederson make the finals and get into next years tour...everyone talks about his commentary on tv, yet he is a great bowler having a tough year.  he has had a great career, and if anyone looking in on the top 50 deserves it, its him.

My money is on Tommy Jones.  He throws it sooooooo nice.  To be in the top 8 with out making a show is very impressive.

I'm wondering with the emotions so high next week, if a player or two would put aside all the negative publicity and resort to a violent act. I don't think it will happen, but with so much on the line for so many players, it's not impossible. The sports channels and media would jump on it so badly, that I would hope even a veteran losing the only thing they've known for the past 10 or 20 years wouldn't do that to the sport they love. Any other opinions?

What's the over-under on airmailed totes in the paddock?  (yes it has been known to happen)

My darkhorse of the week is going to have to be Del Ballard...he got to the round of 32 on the World Championship pattern last year and was actually in the top 10 through something like the first 3 or 4 rounds.  If it plays the same this year...he could be in the hunt.
