Well it is 15 games of qualifying which is 3 blocks of 5 games each. 2 blocks today, and 1 tomorrow. Then they cut to the Top 24 and start match play tomorrow night, and finish it Friday. This is the round robin, where you bowl all the bowlers plus a final position game to equal 24 games.

Additionally, I believe you get 30 bonus pins for a match win, 15 for a tie.  The final standings for the top 24 (and the seeding for the stepladder) is total pins, not including qualifying.

I believe it is total pins INCLUDING qualifying - if it's the true old school format.

Match play is one game, head to head - run like a 24 team league schedule, with the last game a position round. Many careers have been made and killed in the position round alone.

What makes this a better format, in MY opinion, is two things:
1. If you lead the tournament, you can't get knocked out by a couple of badly timed pocket 7-10 splits, and

2. The one game matches, with everyone changing lanes every game, makes it so that no one gets locked into a pair, effectively shutting out the other guy.

My league teammate was crossing with Wes Malott and Chris Barnes. You shoulda seen how Wes was playing the lanes! Holy cow - 7th arrow, lofting the ball 20-25 feet! (And by loft, I don't mean a flat projection loft but an upwards loft). I mean, I think it was airborne over the 7th arrow as the ball was landing a good 5-10 feet past the arrows.
On the right lane, he was standing in front of the ball return and releasing the ball over the right hand gutter of the left lane. He lost one ball though that sailed into the right gutter. Rudy Revs was playing almost the same line and dropped one ball that became an instant gutter shot in the left gutter.
The righties were playing either over 10 with no hand or around 6th arrow, particularly later in the shift. Many righties were starting in front of the ball return when on the right lane.
The lefties weren't playing as extreme a line at all - mostly between 10-15 with a slight belly to the left. It still wasn't easy for the lefties as the righties were burning the heads on the left side, causing lots of carry issues for the lefties. Still, the left side looks like it's a more playable shot, at least today anyway.

Plain and simple, the lefties had the world...none of them were playing deep really at any point in the day and they all whacked it pretty well

I left another 10 pin

It's not the lefties having the world, it's the righties destroying theirs.

Because each game you figure how much you are plus or minus going by a 200 game. So if you shoot 256, you are +56. If you shoot a 183, you are -17. But you just keep on adding what you are after each game.

Everybody was whacking them today in the first squad. The right side was much more playable - especially in terms of playing in the track area. Only Machuga and a few others were out by the 6th arrow.

I like this MUCH better than what has become the new "usual" format.  I think you are much more likely to get the week's best bowlers on TV this way.

I am loving the old school format, it does seem those bowling the best will make the show.  I love the lane condition too.

I talked with several of the guys last week. Without exception, they all liked the old format better. But they all agreed that the fans find the new format more exciting...
And, they're making some money regardless of how they finish, so that's gotta ease the pain a little.

I certainly like the old format better!

I'm sure that the fans who are actually at the venue during the week find the new format more exciting.  They can focus on head to head matches that are actually life and death for the bowlers involved, rather than the old system where the matches are really only for racking up total pinfall (including the bonus for winning a match).

I think that for following the tournament from afar--as most of us have to do--it's more interesting the old way, when we can see guys go up and down the standings as they either find or lose a groove.

I think it works the same way as lane conditions.  When the lane conditions favor certain bowlers' "A" games, they dominate, and when the lane conditions favor another type of players' "A" games, those players dominate.  Certain kinds of bowlers seem to work better under the sudden death format in use now, and other bowlers are better when hanging on for the long haul is the format.  It doesn't make one type of bowler better than the other, the two formats just showcase different strengths.  Sprinters don't win marathons, and marathoners don't win sprints.  Of course, it's match play on TV either way.  I just prefer the old tournament format and the old step ladder type finals as well.

Of course, then there's Norm Duke, who (in spite of losing this week) has shown the ability to handle different lane conditions, different release styles, and different tournament formats better than anyone else, IMHO.
