Thoughts On Todays US Open (Spoilers)
« on: March 30, 2008, 06:42:24 AM »
First let me start off by sayin that i was pulling for Doug Kent to win the event, im a huge fan of his.

With that being said, Congrats to Norm Duke. He put on some performance today, proving that he truly is one of the greatest bowlers to ever hit the lanes. He was consistent, accurate, and he was fun to watch. As you can tell im a Duke supporter, and i just felt like saying some words about him on here.

This guy is one of the best guys to idolize out on the PBA tour. His game is simple and to the point. He is accurate as all hell. He doesnt try to play the lanes, he lets the lanes dictate him. He is exciting to watch. He is a nice guy, nice to his fans and the audience. He shows the perfect amount of emotion when he wins, making it fun to see him win. I feel that Duke just helps bring this sport to the next level. With todays performance im dubbing Duke, IMO, the greatest bowler ever. I know that WRW has way more titles, so does a bunch of other greats, but i feel like Duke is more the type of person you would want your children to grow up watching, idolizing, and copying out on the lanes.

Again, Congrats on the win today Norm, and being the fifth person to ever capture the PBA's Tripple Crown. You truly are one of the greatest bowlers.

Congrats to Duke, however I felt bad for Chris. I thought he bowled an exceptional game but for the tenth frame. Duke bowled great, but I felt he got a couple of real fortunate carry breaks against Chris. JMHO!

They all got breaks.  But that's bowling.  They both used the Shift.  What a great ball.  I have a 16lb & a 15lb.  This was a great Open.  Most of the games were close & came down to the last frames.  Congrats Duuuuuuuuuke!!

Well Norm had alot on his side today.. Emotion is a huge factor, adrenaline, the carry. After they spoke of Norm's grandfather, it kind of seemed destined that he win. The pin carry against Chris certainly showed that!! Great bowling Norm.

I think Duke is the best pure bowler on tour right now and has been for several years.

Barnes is a better physical specimen and probably one of the most intelligent guys out there from several aspects, especially lane strategy, and Walter Ray is more accurate. But Duke is the guy I'd least like to have to bowl for my supper. He's bowling's version of a hungry wolverine -- the last thing you want to open up a door and see looking back at you.

If Duke is over 30 titles now, I can actually see him getting pretty close to Walter Ray in number of titles before it's all over, providing he can stay healthy. I think Duke understands his equipment better and is makes adjustments better than Walter Ray. As for mental toughness, no one is better.

And, the side benefit to seeing Duke (and Mika) on the telecast is you get to see a lot of older, weirder bowling balls used a lot of the time. Duke winning a title earlier this year with a Passion is a pure Duke moment.

He looked like he was using a Shift today. And Mika was throwing an Avalanche.

All that I have to say is that that was some of the best, and most consistent shots I have ever seen someone thrown. Congratulations Norm!

Just got back from the TV Show...great showing by Duke...

Duke was locked in from practice on...

Chris looked lost all throughout practice and then seemed like he made a smart ball change before the match...looked like he was throwing a Rapid fire that just was a little too clean before he switched...could be wrong tho

Doug was in and around the pocket all throughout practice trying to get everything to go...seemed to be making small adjustments but just couldnt create the look he was trying to get...

Mika was trying both an avalanche and twisted fury in practice...the avalance actually seemed to read the lane better than the twisted did so i can see why he went with that...

Great Show!

The thing you have to respect about Norm Duke is that maybe he's a little emotional on TV day, but unlike some of the other guys that just emote for show, his is genuine.   He won today because he had more room for error than the other competitors because of the line he chose to play, the ball selection and the excellent touch that he had.  And I don't care what level of bowler you are, if you have to pure it just to get to the pocket and the other guy can miss a little and still be either a little light or a little heavy in the pocket and carry, you're going to lose, almost everytime.   That's not luck, that's bowling.

He started the show w/a Gravity Shift from what I saw in the 1st frame.  Then went to the regular Shift for the rest of the game.  That was a real good match that cuold have gone either way.  Hooray for Duke!!

congrats to duke great bowler but i not mean to hijack thread just curious if anyone else noticed the hand that kept coming out from the back on the left lane?  Maybe he was getting some help back there  i know that not the case but it was odd to be watching and see that,  yes i do know what the hand was doing

I was pulling for Chris...he had a great look once the match started...and yup a few balls before the match he started throwing the gravity and regular shift...i think if he would have made it to the championship match he had the rapid fire ready just in case they burned fast
