Thoughts On Todays US Open (Spoilers)
« on: March 30, 2008, 06:42:24 AM »
First let me start off by sayin that i was pulling for Doug Kent to win the event, im a huge fan of his.

With that being said, Congrats to Norm Duke. He put on some performance today, proving that he truly is one of the greatest bowlers to ever hit the lanes. He was consistent, accurate, and he was fun to watch. As you can tell im a Duke supporter, and i just felt like saying some words about him on here.

This guy is one of the best guys to idolize out on the PBA tour. His game is simple and to the point. He is accurate as all hell. He doesnt try to play the lanes, he lets the lanes dictate him. He is exciting to watch. He is a nice guy, nice to his fans and the audience. He shows the perfect amount of emotion when he wins, making it fun to see him win. I feel that Duke just helps bring this sport to the next level. With todays performance im dubbing Duke, IMO, the greatest bowler ever. I know that WRW has way more titles, so does a bunch of other greats, but i feel like Duke is more the type of person you would want your children to grow up watching, idolizing, and copying out on the lanes.

Again, Congrats on the win today Norm, and being the fifth person to ever capture the PBA's Tripple Crown. You truly are one of the greatest bowlers.

congrats to duke great bowler but i not mean to hijack thread just curious if anyone else noticed the hand that kept coming out from the back on the left lane?  Maybe he was getting some help back there  i know that not the case but it was odd to be watching and see that,  yes i do know what the hand was doing

Yeah, I saw that too.  I was actually surprised to see that.

Norm called me before the finals and asked what ball he should throw, and where he should play.

Mika called me as well, but I did not answer.  He left a voicemail crying about his horrible hair, and something about Chris Barnes.

Since I am a frequent visitor of this site, I know pretty much everything there is to know about bowling, bowling balls, and everyone else's game.

It is good times.

WRW is not more accurate...that is the biggest misnomer in bowling.  Seems since his nickname is deadeye that he is accurate...not the case.

Its actually quite common during TV Finals. I can remember growing up and always seeing the "hand" during ABC's broadcast. Just a way to expedite the whole pinsetter and ball return process. Congrats to Norm Duke. I was pulling for Chris though.

a truely great performance by norm duke. as good as tommy jones threw the ball last week norm threw it even better today----he had to as the oil pattern was much tougher. if norm duke had been healthy the last two years and been able to bowl a complete season i think he would have been player of the year both seasons.

The hand coming out from the back of the pin deck is to get the ball into the ball return shoot as fast as possible to speed up the telecast. Seeing as the PBA is always pressed for money, they will do anything they can to quicken up the game play and get more commercials in to increase profits.

With the outfits they wore back then, they almost look like prisoners rather than bowlers. LOL!

Duke bowled great, but I felt he got a couple of real fortunate carry breaks against Chris.

Chris did bowl well and Duke carried better than anyone, but that is often a combination of lane play (Norm was the only one playing out) and release.

I don't know if it was Randy or Chris Barnes who made the comment during the telecast "the pins know when you're being nice to the ball at the bottom (of the release)", but I agree 100%.

The thing I love about watching Norm bowl is this:  He makes me realize that I DON'T need more HOOK!  The way he can dominate a pattern shows that it's not always about the big bender, a lot of times being able to play that soft outside line when nobody else can is pure money.

I also enjoyed how the guys talked about down-lane targeting.  That's something that I only very recently started to get a grasp on, and it's really helped my game.  I now realize that if I can hit a specific mark, usually that same outside dark board, I can strike nearly at will.

Oh, and I would have to call that the best show of the year, and a great way to close out the season.  Every match, other than the first, was VERY competitive!

Yeah I think that was my favorite one also.  Very interesting to watch, even for the first match just to see what was happening with each shot and the result.
