That's what I saw, and it is what he does. Don't ask me why though I can't tell you. Maybe he is just comfortable like that. Maybe if someone else could explain?

I know a couple guys that do this, I think they said something to the effect of it allows them to always insert their fingers to the same depth everytime.

I do that.  For me it locks my thumb in a position where I am unable to pinch the ball at the release, as soon as my thumb exits, my fingers are still in a position where I just let the ball off my hand instead of hitting it at the bottom, it increases my revrate.  I love the feel of it since I get a clean release everytime and the ball comes out of my hand like a champ!

Putting your fingers in last can help high revvers hit up on the ball less.  It allows for quicker exit of the fingers.

Putting your thumb in first (say "bury") will increase your span a tad.
Your fingers will not go as deep into the finger holes, and can help give you a bit more length. I normally put my thumb in last...but when the lanes break down a bit, I'll try a ball with my thumb in first. Sometimes it works.

it's rare for a player of that caliber to place his thumb in the ball first. i believe brian leclair does this. i remember dave husted doing it as well. whatever works !

It isn't because of the interchangeable thumbs that he does this. He has been doing it as long as I've known him.

Tommy should win 2 or 3 times a year maybe more now that he's getting accustomed to winning. He has some game.

Yeah, like most have said, it's just what's comfortable. I do change to fingers-first if I'm having clearing problems or I want more side roll than I normally get. To each his/her own.
