I think I was surprised by the outcome of every match.
There was some awfully good bowling going on there.
Aside:
What is sad is that somehow the PBA thinks that by putting out the PBA equivalent of The House Shot, "Stand left, throw right, Rev the piss out of it and win", will bring the audience back to the PBA. Shutting out everyone but crankers will not win viewers. Everyone on that show could bring the ball back from anywhere.
(No, I don't know what the solution is.)

I agree with you Charlest. I made the comment on FB that they should have used the old pattern of 51' (I believe) and make the bowlers play the lanes. Yes all the bowlers were great today, however, it would have been nice to see some real transitional changes other than move deeper. The PBA has done all it can to help bring in ratings but without a way to appeal to the US market and bring in sponsors, it either needs some polarizing figure that everyone can get behind or it needs to open the tour up to all amateurs. To me, this may open the door for sponsors who bowl and just want to get their names on television.

It couldn't be that Thunder Bowl probably has the most worn and hooking surface in the midwest, no, it can't be that. Can't be that you cannot give the best players in the world defined friction, nope, can't be that either. Lets just say its "house" equivalent and "rev the piss out of it".
-
On xtraframe they told that the ratio was 1 to 2,7. Not the toughest pattern, but not exactly a house shot either.
-
Malott is not a cranker at all and he would have won if he didnt choke, he had the game in his hand...but the better 10th frame bowler won!
Belmo stepped up in the 10th and Malott did not. It was a very good match and anyone of them could have won. Cudos for a great match!
-
My take-
If you got the winners of the previous 4 majors on the same show obviously the cream has risen to the top. That's all you can ask for.
As others have said, with built in friction and a short enough pattern the guys on tour are good enough to exploit it.
Belmonte is the PBA poster boy. They only way they script a better outcome is if Belmont shuts him out in the tenth vs winning on the bench.
I hope people don't wonder why the PBA is in the crapper. They again open the tournament up to anybody that has ever won a regional and they still only get 88 entries. At least when they tried this a few years ago they threw some money at it. $40k and nobody comes to play.

I thought it was a heck of a show. Tons of talent and lots of good bowling. I think it was the first show in a long time in which I didn't care who won.
This was also the show that finally showcased the blue oil. They showed it before the first match started and you could see how much the pattern had changed from when it was first applied. Did they change the dye itself? In previous shows, the color was all over the bowling balls.
Before the final match started they showed the oil again in detail. Still plenty of oil just left of the 4th arrow, but the stripe of fresh oil in the heads was much narrower. Looked like a good example of how important launch angle through the front part of the lane is.

the shaving cream incident at the end....would never have taken place after a major in golf. Disrespectful to Belmonte. Maybe intended to be fun....but this is for some reason...just bowling.
The walk off by Rash as Belmo presented player of the year, disrespectful to Belmo.
Pete Weber looked surprised too!
The Bowling great!
Really fun to watch.

Yes Belmo won, but by no means did he "step up" in the 10th....he went face and left a 6-10 and then almost chopped it! He was just fortunate that Malott balked and didn't commit to the shot after that.

Malott is not a cranker at all ...
I never said he was a cranker. I DID say he can bring it back from anywhere. Randy said the same thing.
-
Do not think they changed the dye as I saw Mallots
shirt turning blue from the ball touching it. It was a
good show. Looked to me PDW was a tad nervous.
-
The blue tint in the oil also helps the bowlers. They made the flatter pattern look like a house shot because it took less "lane reading" ability when all you're doing is looking for blue to your left and white to your right, and following the shot inward.
I can only guess that things would have looked different without that factor. All those guys are certainly capable of beating each other on any given day, but the blue tinted oil sure removes any question as to how the lanes are transitioning...

Amen. What is with the guys on this forum. I hate the taped shows. The scoring was too high. The scoring was too low. Announcers suck. OMG, they just stood left and revved the piss out of it while ignoring the fact that ever Randy Pedersen said the National Tour is the young bucks or can put the mega-revs on the ball and play the boomer. Wonder why Walter Ray is the player of the year two years running on the PBA50 Tour but couldn't get a sniff of a trophy his last two years on the National Tour. Please, just stop watching the damn thing, clowns. You're never happy.

I thought the show yesterday was good. I don't think Randy Pederson was really into it for some reason and seemed lost at some times during the show. Maybe it was uncalled for but Bill O'neill and the shaving cream at the end was awesome in my opinion.

The show was excellent and surprising in many ways. As I said, there was some great bowling. I enjoyed it. For all matches except one, the higher ranking bowler beat the guy below him. Barrett might have won, but Malott never lost the pocket.

I believe Many regional winners and senior winners do not want to bowl in this tournament as for the longest time it was for National tour winners only. I believe they want to preserve the integrity of this tournament as much as possible. I also believe it lost some integrity when they opened it up originally to others that were non national tour winners.
-
The integrity is already gone, the PBA took care of that a few years ago, so guys not bowling because they want to preserve it is not the reason they only get 88 entries. Moving the date a month before the tournament took care any guys with a job showing up.
-
By the way, I still enjoyed watching the tournament. The matches were very well contested.

I love it. All of you guys who are "so in touch" with the players on the tour rag on O'Neill for the shaving cream gag don't seem to know that him, Fagan, and Belmonte room together, are best buds, and this is the stuff good pals do with each other. Any of you sanctimonous purists bitch when a baseball player gets a face full of shaving cream? Of course you don't. But this is the PBA and bowling so all you can do is rag, rag, rag. Like I said earlier, don't watch it if it upsets your sensibilities so much, clowns.

So many comments .. first show I missed in years .. I always seem to miss the BEST! ;)

Sanctimonious purists, you can say that again. Their charter member started all this riff raff.

I want to get Northface and Mainzer and start a 3 man team.

Ain't that the truth. He's spewing this stuff over at the other site and people are slapping him down right and left. He can't backpedal fast enough. Its like when he bitched that the PBA should make an anouncement about Ryan Shafer's wife. BEFORE RYAN SHAFER MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT. Yep, that's right. Just to rag on the PBA for the way they were conducting business yet again. Somebody get him some bowling ball reviews so he can read them and act like an expert on how they react on the lane. :o

Barbasol probably liked it. Anything to keep a sponsor happy, at the PBA, is good.

Randy's heartfelt comments seemed more timely, once Ryan's name was brought up.
