Well said.
I for one don't have any problem with what DeVaney said. A little classless? Perhaps. But it represents the opinions of a very sizeable group of bowlers, and it's a group who's voice has gone un-aired so far. I would say a majority of bowlers don't have a problem with the 2 handed style, but there are a fair number of those who do. Also, from the several stories I've heard, I have no trouble believing that those sentiments exist within the professional level as well. It's nice to hear someone express it out in the open.
Several years ago Belmonte was granted a commissioner's exemption and spent his first season on the PBA tour. The PBA spared no expense to dazzle it's viewers with his "unique two handed style", and he quickly became the new face of the PBA. Now, consider this: instead of playing up Belmonte as some kind of revolutionary, they portray him as a heel (or villain). I imagine he'd be liked about as much as Rash is now. How much would the tables turn then in the debate over the validity of the two handed style?
For the record, I personally think the two handed style is just fine, but I find it interesting to consider the media bias built in to this debate. Without it, I think the split in the argument would be a LOT closer to 50/50. With that in mind, is what DeVaney said really that bad?
