US Open 1 PM Eastern Friday
« on: March 28, 2008, 05:16:53 AM »
I just left while they were in & finishing game 6 of 9.

Many people are already lofting the gutter cap, by a lot, trying to hit the SEVENTH (7) arrow and going out to 5 - 10 board. Unless you had a LOT of revs (talking Ken Simard, Wes Malott) it was a crap shoot whether it woudl come back or not. If they kept the ball inside the 10 board, the struck like crazy. It was crazy dry inside.

People, including Sean Rash, were trying to do a "Norm Duke" and "fluff" it up the 5 board.

I watched 2 sets on one pair 65/66.
Set 1: 169, 170, 172, 173 (including Ryan Shaffer & he made a 4-10!)
Set 2: 144, 152, 184, 193, including Doug Kent & Robert Smith.)
A lot of very unhappy bowlers not getting rewarded on many good shots. Saw Doug Kent leave a 7 - 10 with pins flying to the left and to the right gutter.

Brutal, just brutal. and very hard to watch.

Got to love the US-Open, man that pattern really sucks.

What is it about the pattern that its hooking so much. 40ft of oil sounds like it should be hooking less. Is it a low volume that has just deteriorated?

Basically at the open, pretty much the first 10 boards are taken out of play because there is so much oil there, but the reason the pattern is so difficult is that there is an equal amount of oil placed on every board of the lane.  What that means is there is no hold and no free hook.  If you grab it an inch and half, it through the face, if you fan it its 2-10 or worse.  Most players play in, and just move from there.  On synthetics the pattern will break down very unusual with all the players playing all over the lane, meaning inconsistent pairs, lowering scores even more.  The lefties usually don't fair to well at the open, I think its been 20 years since the last one won it.

Not to mention there isn't the usual taper from front to back which gives you some help getting through the heads and some buff-out at the back to smooth out the reaction.  Just a brutal condition to bowl on, period.

sorry for the delay. He was inside with everyone else. He has higher ball speed (while I was watching anyway) so he wasn't winging it way outside. I think that's why he qualified. he was looking pretty good the few times I saw him. Very understated style with excellent results.

The BTM at Albuquerque was like that. I used a high pin pearl and was hoping to go 160/20x/20x/20x. 3rd game I got on a pair whose left lane had about 2 boards for me to hit with that ball. I had 3 opens - couldn;t even leave myself a makeable spare, except once. Had 160 instead of another 200. FLush! down the crapper.

I can't even imagine what these poor guys go through shooting the same oil for NiNE GAMES in a row. Actually, I have some idea: I saw many faces there reflecting the pain today.

This is a common though among league bowlers.  Truth is 40 feet is not that long....it is long enough to create a serious problem.  There is such a large volume of oil to the outside of the lane and so little room to miss that the best path to the pocket is to keep the ball closer to the headpin because there is less ground for the ball to cover.

With everyone playing the middle of the lane, the middle gets charred pretty quickly.  This forces people one of two ways...way right...or way left.  If you move right you have absolutely NO miss to the right, and any shot that is tugged or grabbed hooks exponentially due to the burn.

I bowled this tourney last year and thought I knew how to play deep.....boy was I wrong.
