UPSETS
« on: November 11, 2008, 01:24:06 PM »
ROUND OF 32
P. Allen(#1) loses to Mike Edwards(#32), shoots 834 for the first 3, then averages 201 for the next 4, losing all the rest of the matches.

J. Ciccone comes from 1-3 deficit to win. He was #24, while facing J. Sterner, #9.

#21 Robert Smith over #12 Michael Fagan
#20 Sean Rash over #13 WRW
#23 B. Rowe over #10 T. Book
#26 B. O' Neil over #7 C. Tuholski

ROUND OF 16

#20 Sean Rash fights a grueling 7 game battle with #4 Wes Mallot, winning 4-3.
#11 PDW over #6 G. Zicha in 6 games
#32 Mike Edwards again pulls off an upset with #17 J. Lundquist in 6 games

ROUND OF 8

#2 Parker Bohn loses in (oh my) 4 games to #26 Bill O' Neil...wow.

So, if your keeping track, the top 4 consist of seeds #26, #21, #8, and #3.
Not gonna lie, that definitely didnt play out as I expected...anybody else care to chime in?

Not much to say. I'm happy with the results (as a general rule of thumb)...

The only thing I'm not pleased with is another Michael Fagan-less tv show.

I'd like to see him on TV, and he just can't make it through match play.

I don't see how Smith beating Fagan was an upset.

Because Smith was (by quite a bit) the lower seed...

I don't know how many pins it was...but I'm going on this:

quote:
#21 Robert Smith over #12 Michael Fagan

That looks like 9 places to me...that's quite a ways.

And I'm going by this from the pba website after the second qualifying block:

"
11  Michael Fagan  Patchogue, N.Y.   14  1577  3258  +458  232.71

20  Robert Smith  Columbus   14  1548  3219  +419  229.93
"

Not an upset.

A drastic upset, no. I wasn't "shocked" by the outcome, per se. I wouldn't have betted on Fagan or anything and been p!$$ed if I lost.

But, as far as my personal definition goes, that was technically an "upset".

If you define it differently, that's fine...but I think you're just trying to make the point that we shouldn't have expected any certain outcome. If that's the case, then you're right. I didn't expect any specific winner from that match.

Agreed.  He is probably my favorite bowler on tour, and an extremely nice and funny guy to top it off.

Last year when I went to the Dick Weber Open in Fountain Valley, CA, I really enjoyed talking to him. He's hilarious, always got some funny quip or some random thing to say about anything.

I agree he's the nicest guy on tour, and he's EXTREMELY versatile. I've never seen anyone throw so many strikes up the 2 board then move in with a stronger ball and keep bangin' away at the pocket...all on one of the toughest shots of the season.

I disagree. Fagan was the higher seed (not by many pins, but higher seed nonetheless), and both are extremely good bowlers. I wouldn't have been surprised if either had won that match (though I was admittedly upset that Michael got knocked out in the first round, because, as stated, I think he's one of the most underrated players out there.).

I'm glad to see Robert Smith come out on TV again, though. He was raised in So. Cal, so it's always nice to see a guy who grew up bowling the same tournament clubs as myself in the same houses as myself come out on Tour and succeed.
