Title: Tour Trial Losers
Post by: shelley on June 05, 2005, 01:44:01 PM
Now that TT is finished and we know who made the cut, I'd like to see who you wish had made it but didn't.  I wish Bob Learn and Randy Pedersen had made it, I think they're both very good and it's a shame they're no longer out there.  I think Randy's problem is that every time he gets to doing well, he notices that it's like his only chance to continue his career and the pressure gets to him.

I wish Kelly Kulick had made it. She struggled last year on pattern E - looks like she did better this year.
It would be soooo cool to have an exempt woman in the field!

I would love to have seen Bob Learn Jr. make it through, especially as he called this his last attempt at the tour, and is now going to retire.

He is a great bowler and great competitor, and should have a place on the tour.

I would also have liked to see Randy Pedersen make it too, he's a great bowler and wants it so bad.

I would love to tackle the TT one day, perhaps I'll grab an international exemption the the coming years....

I’m not really a fan of the current exempt tour format. They do need to open it up for more entries and remove the guaranteed money.

However I have no problem with them limiting who can bowl in national tournaments.

I can’t think of another sport that with some minimal requirement can join and organization and move directly into the big leagues. They don’t do it in golf

I would venture that close to 50% of the members of the PBA should not be bowling in a national tour event.

You should have to prove your ability to bowl in a national event.

This qualifying could be through the tour trials, or winning a regional, or so many cashes in a regional.

But simply joining the PBA with a 200 average shouldn’t get you into a national event field.

Roto I disagree. Marketing 101 make customer aware of product. Remember they are businessman who study models its not about what the players want. More names make it harder for the general public to follow or get in touch with. I would have liked to see a few get through but oh well. I feel the PBA owes nothing to anyone as its a business and running unprofitable needed to come to a halt. Privately or small publicly  owned business make it more of an "my stuff, my rules" enviroment. I like seeing the old dogs getting pitched aside as you you are measured on your merit "today" in society not what you have done years ago. I know this sounds a bit callus but bowling is a sinking ship and instead of whining about it like everyone else at least the new owners are shaking things out to see what works and what doesn't. An attempt whether right or wrong beats no attempt at all which was the former PBA and ABC.

Mark my words there will never be another person like Earl Anthony bowling on tour ever again.  No way can a simple grocery man just go bowl a PBA event now adays because its not a sport for the PBA any more its about the money thats y they renamed the patterns to get more money from merchendise they dont care anymore.

So they should have continued on as the PBA had for all those years, continued to LOSE money and eventually go the way of the Ladies Tour?  Like Lefty just said, these are businessmen who aren't used to, and will not accept failure.  They are trying to fix it so it will be here for years to come.  And I see no reason why "a simple grocery store man" can't bowl a PBA event.  Bowlers have made it through the PTQ to the telecast, and I believe at least one of the TT winners just became a PBA member a few weeks prior to bowling.  If you're good enough, you'll win.
