Randy's Paradigm & drllings examples
« on: January 22, 2006, 02:17:43 PM »
I wonder why he rushed them? I figure he must have because he threw the lower pin one much too slow in order to prove that it would hook earlier than the other one. I thought it ironic that the lower pin one had a much more pronounced backend than the first one, which he said would go longer and backend more. Because both balls were so shiny, the lower pin one seemed to give a much better midlane read; thus more backend. or was I mistaken???

I don't care, I was just happy they showed it.  For once, they treated us like more than dumb bowlers.

I think they should have at least shown the frame over frame shot they do with the pros when they are playing different lines and whatnot. Would probably have shed a better light on how the ball reacted.

I agree or they could have at least had the same camera position, angle and zoom level so I could have done the overlay myself.
I played with it for a bit but it will take way more cropping, zooming and centering than I want to put into it to see maybe a foot of difference.

The speed thing is an optical illusion when I sync up the release points they get to the arrows in the same length of time/frames (29.97fps or 1 frame/.033sec).

I had taped the show and watched it later on in the evening and was very glad it was done...however,....while watching that part I re-wound it and stopped each ball at the break point, and to be honest....those balls didn't look that different at all,.... at regular speed either.

I think it would have been a better idea to do a 'stro-motion' of both balls to clearly show any difference.

Even then.....the lines from stro-motion would not have been that different....

charlest, I agree

You would think that they would give enough time when taping the segment to allow a few takes of each delivery.  Then they could have selected the two takes that would have shown the difference between balls properly.

my opionion?

this was a very good marketing scheme for the PBA and the bowling industry as a whole.  when you introduce technology to a game it suddenly becomes more appealing.  Why?  well up to the point prior to any explaination at all, your average jane/joe feels that bowling is grabbing a ball and throwing it at some pins.  But, introduce technology into it, all the sudden it no longer is a "red neck, beer drinking, crack showing" sport, the more technology that is introduced the more appealing it becomes

My wife thought it was pretty neat, and she doesn't really know anything about ball technology.  She believes me when I say that the different balls do different things, even if she doesn't see it with her eyes.  She thought the core cutaway stuff was pretty neat, though imagine how much neater it'd've been with a core that had physical differences besides density.  The RAD core uses density variations to create the MB/PSA, but something like the Morpheus core would have been more informative (plus, I'd like to see it).

I agree they could have given the shots more separation, they really did look like they were very similar.  Or show the ball path with the red/blue lines like they do for some of the majors.

Next week: Surface adjustments.  Given that surface is supposed to be 80% of the ball reaction, doing that with a dull vs. polished surface should be significantly more informative.  This one wasn't as good as the inside/outside speed lesson we saw when PDW was on, but neat nonetheless.
