« on: April 03, 2010, 08:40:25 AM »
here they are in order
really hoping to see big Wes climb the ladder
sad to say we have to watch Scroggins again in a championship match and that he now has a change to win POY

Unfortunately, I do disagree about how the POY is determined.  However, this is a better way than the way the POY was decided prior to this.  All of the stats though should be weighted to determine the POY.  I believe this would the best way and fair way to all of the bowlers.  I like Scroggins, he gets the job done and quietly.  Walter Ray is the same way and people have talked about him for years.  Even though these guys are not "exciting" to watch, it's the end result that matters.  This telecast would have been perfect had Walter Ray been in it instead of Angelo.  This show though, will be interesting to watch.  Malott has had previous timing issues, hope it's resolved.  Not too sure about Angelo, haven't really seen him all year.  It appears barnes isn't having issues with the mental part of his game, its a matter of carry.  Weber, one of the greatest showmen of the game and a "fierce" competitor.  Scroggins, the "sleeper" who has had more issues with single pin spares when it matters the most this year and has relatively escaped from them.  I'm just looking for a good show.  Any of them really do not have an edge over the other.

I'm sorry but I don't like the fact Scroggins can get POY. He would be 3rd high in end of the points, earnings, and championship round appearances. He is 5th in average, 14th in cashes, and 9th in matchplay appearances. To me that doesn't spell POY. It has been a GREAT year for him so far, please don't think I am taking credit from him. I just think the point system based off the telecasts has a weakness. Don't get me wrong, titles are important but for him to have 3 regular titles and no majors doesn't deserve POY status I feel. How he throws the ball doesn't have an affect on me, just not feeling that great about him possibly being named POY when I feel Walter had the better year. Again, Scroggins had a GREAT year but not a POY season in my book.

While I respect your right to disagree with the way the pBA has set the standards for determining the POY, I think you might reconsider the factors that you think might have more imporance than where/when a player finished in the top 5 spots for all the tournaments.

Realize that average, number of cashes, and match play appearances really have a small reflection on how high he finishes in any one tournament. And the PBA, by only setting points for the top 5, has set the bar high.

Please also realize that Scroggins has made the most of his cashes, match play appearances and average, by "finishing the job" in most cases. By that I mean, he has used his high appearance ratio to the maximum advantage, even more than Walter Ray. While I admire WRW, his game and his never-say-die attitude, he has not "finished the job" as often or as well as Scroggy has. Remember this is no longer a popularity contest. If it were, I'd vote for WRW and maybe Bill O'Neil who has been more impressive in people's minds, for the most part, than the "un-pretty" Scroggins.

Scroggy has just done more with what he has than anyone else, apparently.

Also I think the PBA doesn't want the POY to be a statistical game. Not sure if you remember, but back in the late 80 or early 90s, I think Marshall Holman won POY when he didn't win one tournament. Others who had won one but di dnot win POY were pretty annoyed at the PBA.

I'm excited for the show, should be a fun one to watch with the players, and it will be cool to watch Scroggins bowl for POY. Its just an awesome situation that the season comes down to one single match to decide POY.

also its not really that hard to miss or not repeat when there are minimal movements in your game and you puck it down 5 which is exactly what Scroggins does

If that is true then why ain't you, and many others, out there on tour making a living.  If it is so easy why isin't the other pros doing the same thing to get a check.  Don't diminish Scroggins talents.  It may not be pretty but it is effective and you can't be serious when you sat it's really not that hard.

I just honestly cant bowl that way, I dont bowl on enough volume of oil that these guys do
and I dont want to go out on tour I make more money a year than anyone out on tour does and work less days a week and a month than they do for the most part
and I like being home with my family
When I was younger I really did want to go out on tour, when I got older and saw the reality of it
the tour is just not appealing for me personally
but I do like to watch it on TV

Charlest, I agree with you to a point. But, I think Walter's major and regular event wins eclipses Scroggins 2 or possible 3 regular tour titles. I do agree it should not just be a statistical battle. Take for example Doug Kent's 06-07 POY year. 2 Major wins, but if I do remember correctly he wasn't at the top for stat categories. Without the thought process of how much the majors count, Kent would never have got that award. I just feel it's hard to ignore the  stats when POY is such a big award. I like how Track_Fanatic described how he feels POY should be decided. Thankfully it isn't a popularity vote anymore, that is reserved for the ESPY lol. Just another opinion on the inevitable and ever-changing variables in sports lol.
