With all due respect still being given for being a tour titelist, has Dave Traber ever won a title?

Traber and Shafer are stylists in comparison to some of the other mentions.
Scott Devers - except for the figure 8 armswing was pretty much just another left handed fluffer/stroker.
Devers, Ron Williams, and Mark Williams - all proved the point that you can do practically anything you want with your arm swing as long as your timing provides enough time to get it back in the correct position when it really matters.
-
Scott Devers, hands down

I'll throw in another vote for Ron Williams. The guy had skills, though, so it's hard to knock him. Wouldn't want to mess with the guy in "King of the Hill" matchs, that's for sure.

Does he hit his leg with the ball on his back swing? Wow! He gets my vote.

I also gotta throw another name out there: Mike Lichstein. I'm not sure if he's a huge name nationwide (pardon my ignorance), but he's a huge name in the New England area. I know he made a doubles telecast with P.A. back in '92, and the guy is downright nasty. Real nice guy, too...
Here's the link to that doubles telecast:

Mark Roth did not have very good form though fun to watch. Rick Lawrence has to be there if Scott Devers is.

Did Bob Vespi ever win a title? If he did, he's got all my votes . . he's been on ESPN classic a couple weeks ago. Yi I couldn't stand to watch him . .

This guys form sucked, but his ball looks better going down the lane than Shafers.

^^WINNER.^^
-
Quick apology...
Mike Lichstein never won a singles title on the PBA Tour. His father Larry did (he's a Hall of Famer, no less), but Mike never did. I guess I got confused switching between the "ugliest form to win" and the "prettiest form to never win" threads. It's late, so give me a break.
But the point is still valid. Mike is still a tremendous talent (for those of you familiar with the NEBA tournament series, you all-too-well know what I mean), but if you happened to stroll into the bowling center and saw him practicing, you'd wonder if he realizes he looks completely ridiculous up there.

Cant remember if he won or not but what about Brad Snell? Funky pose/follow through and ball looked like it rolled out off his hand. Otherwise, Devers get the nod for me as the fugliest.

Vespi was aweful and yes I believe he won---probably in Mechanicsburg once. Terrible.
Ok here is one Ill throw out there. Probably not the worst, but the guy stiff legged every shot just like Traber and pulled out of it bad-----
Butch Soper. I know he may have been likeable---but if you are going to say Traber, Soper is really not better---just not a jerk.

I know that I can't come close to beating this dude, but PA has an ugly approach. The release is okay. Everything else is, um...er....odd looking.

Didn't realize that winning and succeeding in bowling involved a beauty contest.

It doesn't and never has - obviously. This is just entertainment.

Scott Devers...I didn't bowl back then but watched.
And Rick Lawrence...not pretty but effective also!

Scott Devers is definitely on the list, but I remember Brian Kretzer when he had the 12-13 step approach. I know he's hasn't won, but that was painful to watch.

Only one answer to this question...Wrongfoot Lou Campi. He won the 1st PBA Title.

All time Devers and Rick lawrence, recently Mineman nice guy but it is hard to believe he made it exempt status.
-
Stormfrenzy,
Wayne Webb had one of the greatest releases ever. His form was far from ugly.
-
Agree very much with Ron Williams and Scott Devers as styles that are not to be imitated (but it certainly worked for them).
I believe that the greatest bowler with the worst form of all time (and many people think he may be the best of all time) is Don Carter.
Here's a clip of him:

DEVERS!
Painful to watch!
-
Devers had an awesome ball roll. Pins only react to the angle and velocity the ball is coming in at. Devers found a way to reach optimum velocity for his low revrate that turned into awesome carry.

I was actually going to say that a couple of pages back but was afraid I'd get jumped for it. I tend to think of him as one of the most accurate bowlers I've ever seen, which is good for him because I can't see how he ever got anything on the ball with that wrist/elbow combination.

its ron williams but he is a great bowler and also great at drilling balls he drills all mine for me
-
easy...Roger Bowker. However, the guy has titles and has a ton of regional titles.

Bob Learn
I agree lane 1 he was too herky jerky at his release. It made it hard to watch
-
Learn looked like Sonic the Hedgehog in his first few steps then he was all arms and explosion in the last step. Able to repeat it, but an odd person to watch.
Webb threw it good. Not perfect, but far from the worst. Soper, Shafer, and Trabers fall into the stiff leg and chuck school of thought.
So the question becomes. Which is more important to you, a good armswing, good balance, good timing???
Dave Traber may be the worst combination---the locked hand on follow-through, the stiff legged, end over end. Then he opens his mouth on TV shows and says "You gotta deliver" and yet he never does. Worst form with a big mouth.
Shafer has a big mouth, but I personally feel like he does alot with very little. I also get the sense that while he may be likeable on tour (amongst players), I feel like if he could get more crowd support, maybe he wouldnt feel like he was bowling against the lanes, his opponent, and the crowd. Just get the sense he always is trying to shut someone up in the crowd or trying to beat Norm Duke or something. Just my 2 cents.

I personally love David Traber's game. I love his commanding, forceful release. His far outside line is dominating and has some of the loudest strikes I've ever heard. His brother Dale though, I do not care for his backswing and follow through. He has regional titles though..a lot of them.
And if you think Ryan Shafer's game is crazy now you should see him pre resin in the late 80's and early 90's. He used to rip the holes out of the ball...kind of like when Bob Learn would crank it up deep inside.

J-Rad Lawrence
-
Durbin(pretty much straight up delivery), Roth(manhandles the ball), Amletto (see Roth, but now contemporary), Mark Baker, Traber & maybe Mazza for a strange lefty. Now Steve cook was a good form for a power lefty, Aulby & Anthony with classic lefty styles & PBIII for the best combination of power & style
kind of answered 2 threads in 1...
