Unusual Pro TV Ball Choice......
« on: April 23, 2006, 06:09:37 AM »
When it comes to the telecasts do/have any of the pro's made an unusual/different ball selection to the norm?

What I mean is most of the time you see the bowlers using mostly top end/highly aggresive balls, but has/do any of them ever bowl with something mellow/entry level on the telecasts such as a plain urethane ball or something like a powergroove etc?

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

Jim Pratt used an Dynothane Eagle something. Plastic. Doesn't get any cheaper than that.

mike aulby won the 1998 abc masters throwing a brunswick black blitz, a three-piece urethane ball. at the time, brunswicks latest and greatest was the attitude III and the danger zone red alert.

Steve Jaros has thrown the Vendetta Black and Vendetta Magnum recently on tv. Jim Pratt threw a American Eagle spare ball on tv last season no-thumbing it down and in.

Unless he shot another 300 that I was unaware of on TV, this is wrong.  I do believe he shot his 300 with the Stinger Low-Flare Particle.  The ball was definately not the V2 Clean as it was a dark, single cover ball.

I think you're right about the Low Flare Particle. Definitely wasn't a V2 Clean though.

Walter Ray threw the Helix a couple of times on TV. He won with it the second time at the 97 Petraglia. It enabled him to throw it hard off the corner and carry when nobody else had reliable carry. You use what you have available in your arsenal to play the correct breakpoint. He lost throwing the Helix the time before. As with all balls, you throw what you think gives you the best chance to win. Sometimes you choose wisely, and sometimes you sit back and say "WHAT WAS I THINKING!"

I remember Walter Ray winning with the Helix. It was drilled so that it barely touched the gold ring. About the only way they could win with that thing as I remember Jaros and Walter Ray not doing too well the first time they used it on TV.

I remember when Jason Couch threw the Tai Chi(Yin Yang plastic ball) at the Japan cup in like 99.  Norm Duke used a Blue Maxim on the same show.

I remember one of the first regionals I ever watched, Rudy Kasimakis beat Ryan Shafer int he finals throwing a 290 with a Track Boxing Glove spareball while Ryan Shafer was hooking the whole lane with a sanded v2.
