Title: Unusual Pro TV Ball Choice......
Post by: supernoodle on April 23, 2006, 06:09:37 AM
When it comes to the telecasts do/have any of the pro's made an unusual/different ball selection to the norm?

What I mean is most of the time you see the bowlers using mostly top end/highly aggresive balls, but has/do any of them ever bowl with something mellow/entry level on the telecasts such as a plain urethane ball or something like a powergroove etc?

I think Brad Angelo used a Power Groove a couple seasons ago.

Wasn't Tommy Jones throwing an Ice the first round?  That's not top end equipment is it?

I don't buy the whole 'select a ball for advertising' thinking that I see on some of these threads.  Don't get me wrong, I'm in marketing and I'd love it when a bowler uses my higher margin equipment to win, but its more important that they win first.  As a bowler I would be a fool to put myself at a disadvantage by using the wrong equipment in order to get a few extra bucks.

That said, high speed / high rev. rate bowlers will usually match up better with the higher end stuff.

Tommy Jones is an Ebonite staffer, and he has used Big Time, Ice, and The One over the past year - High end to midpriced stuff.

Norm Duke is a free agent who uses primarily Storm and he seems to use high end stuff as well - Paradigm, Passion, Ace, etc.

Bottom line, these guys use what works for them... and it usually is the higher end stuff.

The TIME Series is a midrange price point, can be agressive to weak.  But it isn't top shelf top pricepoint equipment.  TJ has thrown the TIME series a bunch.  The Storm staffers have been throwing Fire series (Pyro, Fired Up, etc.)  Most of the time, when they use agressive balls, they use weaker layouts too.

Brunswickinsiders.com has pictures of every week's balls used and pics of their layouts.

One of the really odd times was last year when Patrick Allen threw an original Vicious. That's an old ball compared to what is usually thrown.

I am 99.9% sure there is no added incentives for using the latest greatest ball on TV, unless it's written into staffers contracts. I've seen the incentive sheets posted at tournaments, and they only want branded balls and logos on TV. No mention of particular balls.

Recent examples of this include Sean Rash with an Inferno, Norm Duke with an X Factor Ace, Tommy Jones going to a V2 Solid, etc. I know that the TV bowlers will usually have a ball drilled up for TV thats usually the newest in the line, but they aren't required to throw it.

Older, but hardly milder.

TJ used a blue Ice last year to beat Voss, Angelo threw a Chrome/Yellow Power Groove, and Couch and Mika have used Stinger Low-flares in the past.  WRW used a Crash last year to lose to Mike Wolfe (I think).  Barnes threw a Trooper (the purple one), but he lost with it.  I think Robert Smith threw a HRH at some point.  Those are just the ones I remember.

when i bowled in some national tournys i saw paper work to wear this shirt and throw this ball for so much money...your staffers dont get extra money but for someone not on a staff its tempting to make extra 5k for using a certain ball////

Norm uses milder even rolling equipment.  When he was with AMF, he used the black tour menace quite often as opposed to there stronger stuff.  My guess would be he likes to get a more even consistent read.

Unless he shot another 300 that I was unaware of on TV, this is wrong.  I do believe he shot his 300 with the Stinger Low-Flare Particle.  The ball was definately not the V2 Clean as it was a dark, single cover ball.

Walter Ray threw the Helix a couple of times on TV. He won with it the second time at the 97 Petraglia. It enabled him to throw it hard off the corner and carry when nobody else had reliable carry. You use what you have available in your arsenal to play the correct breakpoint. He lost throwing the Helix the time before. As with all balls, you throw what you think gives you the best chance to win. Sometimes you choose wisely, and sometimes you sit back and say "WHAT WAS I THINKING!"

I remember Walter Ray winning with the Helix. It was drilled so that it barely touched the gold ring. About the only way they could win with that thing as I remember Jaros and Walter Ray not doing too well the first time they used it on TV.

I remember when Jason Couch threw the Tai Chi(Yin Yang plastic ball) at the Japan cup in like 99.  Norm Duke used a Blue Maxim on the same show.

I remember one of the first regionals I ever watched, Rudy Kasimakis beat Ryan Shafer int he finals throwing a 290 with a Track Boxing Glove spareball while Ryan Shafer was hooking the whole lane with a sanded v2.

No, Lonnie hasn't been on the show for 2 years now I think.  That was Jim Pratt who was the no thumber, and lost to Mika in the finals

That's what Pratt did year before last in the Geico Classic.  DT Eagle ball for strikes, playing around the first arrow.  Energy for left-side spares.  Shame he lost to Mika in the title match.
