US Open day 2
« on: February 15, 2006, 03:38:07 AM »
Did any one else notice the scores from the first block this morning:

B squad through 12 games (six today)

1, Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., 2,455.
2, Richard Wolfe, Vienna, Va., 2,421.
3, Michael Machuga, Erie, Pa., 2,415.
4, Brian LeClair, Athens, N.Y., 2,374.
5, James Wallace, North Babylon, N.Y., 2,365.
6, (TIE) Chris Barnes, Flower Mound, Tx, and Mike Wolfe, New Albany, Ind., and Tom Carter, Rochelle, Ill, 2,323.
9, Kenneth Abner, Cincinnati, 2,318.

After 12 games only 3 guys are plus?  Wow......

Brian Valenta, the two hander, has an awesome look.  Where is he playing might you ask?  Why he's lofting the ball a good 35-40 feet down the lane.  As soon as it hits the lane it's charging left.  I saw a bit of him yesterday morning and he looked unreal.  I hope he makes the show cause you've never seen anything like this in your life.

Would be suprised to see very many lefties do well in qualifying.

Does anyone know how many they are cutting to?

Cut to top 1/4

Here's an old timer lefty who may sneak up on 'em.  Steve Cook is 47th after 12 games.  Don't know if it's realistic for him to even make the cut, but wouldn't that be a blast from the past if he makes the top 16 or so?

I am bowling the open this week.  Shot is very tough.  I am at -180 after 12 games.  I am bowling B block and we bowled on the second shift shot yesterday.  I had 2 bad games that combined were -100 (-129 yesterday and -51 today).  Today on the fresh had a nice look.  One bad game that I started split, split, split, spare, split (53-5th frame) but still shot 161.  Then bounced back with 243 the next game.  Six more games to go tomorrow.  With a little luck and hoping the fresh plays similiar tomorrow, maybe I can sneak in for Friday.  Everyone is estimating the first cut at -30 to maybe -60 (18 games; last year it was -68).  If you want more details just ask.  I also bowled the Open last year and stunk up the joint but learned a TON.

Jeff,
What is your league average? I am thinking of giving it a shot next year.

My friend who is right near Jeff S.in the US open is 240 in league!

No one at his home house on his side of the lanes is real close to that!
Did much better last year but is sort of lost this year!

Dry heads and wet backends are not most strokers friend...then there is Walter Ray! and Norm Duke!

My league average right now is 220 in 2 different centers.  I have booked as high as 232 and was 225 last year.  In PBA regionals 2 years ago I averaged around 192 for over 60 games.  There is a guy that bowls regionals from the area and does ok in them (cashes >50%) and averages 240+ at his house and is like -280.  So average is not a big factor to look at.  Shot repeatability and staminia are VERY important.  And if you are right handed you better be able to play in front of the ball return.

Valenta seemed to bomb today on the fresh, close to 140 under, but he's still in really good shape to make the cut.

Two local guys, Aaron Buss and Tom Carter, are 11th and 19th.  Aaron throws a really pretty ball, only about 24 years old.  Tom owns the pro shop that is about a minute from my house.

Don, is Aaron Buss any way related to Jesse Buss?  I've bowled a few tournaments with Jesse and he has a pretty solid game as well.  Sounds like the whole family is pretty good at bowling.
