Walter Ray's comment in USBC magazine on two handed releases.
« on: November 25, 2008, 09:34:21 AM »
Go to the new USBC magazine and read about the over hyped Jason Belmonte. On page 27 a few exempt pros are asked about what they think about Osku and Belmonte's style. Walter Ray said he is learning it himself and quote " When I get control of it I'm going to try it in a tournament ". He said try, and didn't say if it would be a PBA tournament or said it would be his "E" game but just to read that is ridiculous. Why would you need to throw it like that when your already the greatest? Does it realize he's 50 and could injure himself? I think Parkers Bohn III's comment was spot on and said let's see how they are at his age throwing it like that. We already have seen what happened to mid 30's Robert Smith throwing it how he does which is apples to oranges of a two handed release but I am curious myself.
When Osku Palarma or Jason Belmonte starts winning PBA tournaments I will be a believer. I think both of them have terrific game and outside of the PBA have already done a lot to prove they are good.

He said he wants to do it on patterns that he has trouble making the ball hook on, him like most 1 handed strokers have trouble making the ball turn and carry on the heavier/longer patterns. Where us 2 handers dont have that problem at all, I can play where normal people cant, ever see someone play the outside of the US OPEN pattern with a dull ball out to about the 3rd board where it should slide in the gutter and have it come back, I can, along with the rest of the 2 handers I'm sure. I think it's great that Walter Ray is experimenting with it and isnt a stick in the mud like a lot of other people, as for it long lasting, it sure does make turning the ball/throwing it harder/throwing 15lbs than 1 handed, as long as your hips and upper body stay strong your golden and it will last long, it has just as much injury potential as crankers throwing one handed, not any more or any less.

As for winning PBA tournaments, Jason has bowled in 4 (all majors at that) and has cashed or made match play in every single one. Osku has bowled in 2 US Opens and thats it and he made the TV show in his first one, records like that are pretty hard to argue with. Jason will win one or more before this years over.

There is a local Detroiter that has been throwing 2 handed in anywhere from 3 to 5 leagues a week for more than 20 years.  His back/shoulder/hip is fine last I talked to him.

good luck and good bowling.

its just against controversies, didnt they say that Pete wont last long with his backswing back then? i believe if proper exercise and training is done by the bowler, there should not be any problems throwing a 16lb ball.

people who gets injured in bowling, is due to few reasons i believe:

1) no proper warm up, how many local hacks have u seen arriving at the alley late, puts shoes on and goes hard on their first ball?

2) accident, i do accept the fact that accident in bowling can happen, sticky lanes, off timing and hitting the ankle or feet, too much turn and break a finger.

3) going against physics, i believe, with a style like Barnes or Bohn, they can just throw the ball all the day long, however, Smith or Jones might find that a bit more challenging.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

Maybe he'll do it on the senior tour, just to give everyone else a chance.

Wasn't he throwing two-handed on his championship-match fill balls last year?

Yes, he did do that.  It was actually quite amusing to see him throw the ball like that at the time, and everyone got a kick out of it to boot.  I wouldn't put it past someone with WRW's talent to give it a go two handed, and knowing his dedication to his game he would probably do very well with the release once he got his timing down.  I bet he may try it in a pro-am in the future before trying it in a tourney, but it would be fun to watch.

He's a world class horse shoe pitcher with both his left and right hands, I don't see why he can't be a world class bowler with two radically different styles.  It would be a testament to how insanely talented he is if he could make the two-handed release work well enough to be competitive at that level.

In the end, there are some patterns where he may feel he's got less of a chance with his normal release.  If he thinks that a two-handed release may offer him a better look, why shouldn't he do so?
