PBA.com Final Frame
« on: December 01, 2005, 04:58:55 AM »
Anybody see this on the PBA's website?  It sounds like it could be interesting, with 50 guys trying to roll the most strikes with the final four getting a pro "coach" and going for an exemption for next year.

Here's what I found the most exciting though:

Each coach will be wired with a microphone so that viewers can hear the technical advice they give to the competitors.

THANK YOU.  Now if they'd only have technical talk about the lane and bowling balls on every show it'd be more incentive for bowlers to get interested instead of Randy just saying, "You can play the lane down the outside or from inside out."  Gee thanks for that nugget of info Randy.

It'll be nice to hear some of the technical stuff, but really, do some of those guys need coaching?  I'm sure Randy or Bob Learn, both of whom have been on tour for 20+ years, would love to take advice from Tommy Jones.  Yes, I can see how Jason Couch might have some interesting things to say to Dave Traber.

I think it's a gimmick, having "coaches" for those guys who can't make it on thier own.

I'll probably tape it all the same.

If you read the full article - these guys don't really act as "coaches" - they're more technical advisors AND partners. Because if their guy doesn't strike, they have to!

I'm not real sure I'd like this kind of thing, but if they did something like it locally, I'd take part.

But hey - televising it on Christmas Day??? come on. Couldn't they have done better than that?

I guess I glossed over that part.  Still, a professional bowler (especially some of those guys with 20 years on tour) shouldn't really need technical "help".

Yeah, that kinda sucks.  They'll probably post really low numbers, then point to that as a lack of interest in that format (or worse, bowling on TV in general).  It will be TV exposure for some of those guys that haven't really had any before.  I've heard a lot aboug Michael Fagan but have never seen him.  I'm sure I watched the Empire State Open back in '03 but I don't recall seeing him.

Slightly OT - Michael Fagan has the release to die for.

If I were to die, I'd like to come back as that release.

I was thinking about this on my way home from work.  Honestly, I would rather see the PBA stage a doubles event where they would randomly pair these players into doubles teams and have them seeded into randomly selected tournament brackets with single game elimination rounds.  Instead of giving one exemption, two exemptions would be awarded.

The old National/Senior Doubles tournaments had the two groups go through separate quals, then matched up based on their standing after qualifying.  The top two would be paired for match play (probably round-robin like the US Open), and so on down the line.  I don't know if it was scotch doubles, Baker doubles, or team totals in match play, but any of them would be nice.  Scotch or Baker doubles wouldn't really take any more time than normal match play, but team totals would take twice as long.

I think it'd be cool.  64-players could be seeded into 32 doubles teams using random pairing or two 32-man blocks.  You can use the normal Round of 64 qualifying round on Thursday to do the seeding.

I'd like to see the three-man matches like they had a few years back or the three-game sweepers like the old Dick Weber Classics.  Those at least aren't gimmicky.

I like the idea of using a baker or scotch doubles tournament.  At least the people going for the exemptioning using this format are not gaining it through a gimmick.  The doubles format was a legitimate event format in the PBA for years.  The PBA should reinstate this event format for players looking for a last chance at getting an exemption spot.
