Look at these scores Voss shot the 1st 3 games. Barnes is in big trouble.

Give him a break. I've never been a huge Voss fan, but he's had a rough time recently. Divorce. Injuries. Not to mention his job - perform or go broke. That kind of stress adds up. Probably spent a sleepless night icing the hamstring and figuring out how much of the $$ the Ex the Ex's lawyers were gonna get. Not to mention missing the kids. And then to come out of the gate like he did - that was just too much to take for someone who still considers himself to be a POY candidate and a "top tier" bowler. To make it worse, he's a "purist" who feels that modern equipment has destroyed the game/sport of bowling. It's taken away his strengths (shot making with hand position and speed changes) and rewarded the high-speed hi-rev players. Worse, modern equipment has allowed bowlers with faulty fundamentals to succeed. I don't profess to know what's in his head, but it must wear him down being passed by week after week by players who wouldn't have been able to cash back in the "old days". Don't misunderstand me - I think that Chris Loschetter has a pretty solid game and would be a player in any era, but there are a lot of players having success in the "modern era" who would not have succeeded in the past without MAJOR changes in style and improvement in fundamentals.
In summary, let's keep it all in perspective. One uncharacteristic display of marginal behavior shouldn't be allowed to diminish a long and successful career.

quoted from PBA thanks to Mr. Voss

OK, you want to know what happened. 15 minutes of practice, a guy takes a dull sanded ball, and plays right up 7-8-9 towards the 3 pin. In all of my matches, tv, etc. I have never experienced someone purposely not trying to strike, but to build a stripe to bank off when the lights come on. 2 minutes before the show starts, move 10-13 left, and throw it right. This dictates how the lane will be played. When someone does this, they are saying, you will not play right of where I am doing this. You will play left of what I am doing. I don't agree with this. Unfortunately, there's no rule to prevent it. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing right in front of me. How this is supposed to be the most prestigious tournament, yet integrity takes a back seat. It's not his fault, he bowled great all week. Nothing against him, just the rules that allow integrity to be destroyed. What did I say into the camera? BAN SANDING BOWLING BALLS. Read my lips,

Enough said,

I apologize for my behavior, I love this game, just want to see it played fair

Well Voss better get a better ball rep cause that how match play is played out there on tour. Chris was mixing a little offense with a little defense.

Voss's point was one that was discussed a couple weeks back as well. I agree with him. I think that the pros should have a pair to get loose on then maybe 3 or 4 balls on each lane of the show pair. That way there wont be the purposeful torching to open up/close out a line but enough time to attempt to get a feel for the pair. Thats my opinion.

now it all makes sense........

Joe and I were there and I did notice CL throwing a sanded (pretty darn dull) Ultimate ?? couldn't tell....anyhow .....then all the sudden ,...polished Inferno!

I think CL would have done this regardless of who he was bowling against...but BV got the stick here.......

We could not hear what he said into the camera, but saw it happen and couldn't tell what he said either.....

"ban sanding balls" ...that's a little extreme.....

but....I can see why he was pi$$ed ......

BUT ...then again....he could have done the same thing with a different ball, meaning....move where CL was w/ a different ball.....

NLPS...I hope you're kidding....because that comment (in my eyes) would show that you think sandbagging was ok ....and I know you don't

Jeff, I was only joking but I think a few people here on this site and on PBA.com are just kissing BV butt. This stradegy has been in affect for years. I think BV is pissed because he lost to this unknown player to most. If Walter Ray or Robert Smith would have done this which they do frequently on shows would have BV said a word most likely not.

Jeff, Yes, Voss could have done the exact same thing, using a certain ball to build himself a shot, but he didn't.  And I think he didn't because he doesn't believe it's right to do so.  He probably views it as cheating and he wouldn't be able to look himself in the eye if he did that.  He would rather keep his integrity and lose than have to resort to tricks to win.

I've said this before, and I still believe it, just because everybody else does it, and it's been done for years, doesn't make it right.  CL's ball reaction didn't look as good as it did the first game.  And I think that's because he sped up the breakdown of the lanes and didn't know how to adjust to it.  You need to play the shot you are given instead of trying to turn the lane into something you can score on.

Dan....NO....not what I meant...

I meant...if you can't beat 'em ...join 'em .....if CL was creating space...then put down the sanded TNT, pick up a polished (insert AMF ball here) and play the same line CL was playing.....

not "create a line" like CL did......just play in the same area w/ a different ball......

Sorry Jeff, I thought you meant he could have moved in and destroyed Chris's line.  Yeah, I don't know why he insisted on playing that line with that ball, I would have thought a combination of weaker ball and deeper line would have been better, but that's why he's won 20 some odd titles and I struggle to average 200 on a THS.

amen Dan !! LOL ....

wierd thing is...Joe and I were talking after that match, and we both noticed how small his "area" was ...he had NO room for error..and it showed!!

anyhow....

funny thing was...I do remember CL using something really dull,...then went to an inferno! ....AND....I also remember Voss CONSTANTLY fishing during practice to find a line !  All he had on the rack were 2 TNTs and his Baby Ruth spare ball...

I read comments like this, and it's no wonder there's no integrity left in bowling.  While I think that Voss could have doe something different, I respect his position and his desire to see some integrety returned to the game.  However, while it may not be illegal to do what CL did, I would (and do) to question the ethics in it.

What was he throwing, it looked like a TNT with all the writing sanding off. For real, Voss is one of the most versitale on tour and I guess he thought he could make that line work seeing as how he was bowling the only other righty and that righty was playing deep.

I realized that I am a bum! The more I learn the worse I bowl. I have left a pocket 3-9 with a 16lb bowling ball. How'd I do it?????? UHHHHH IOONO

Bob, I agree with what you are saying, but how to do you measure what grit a ball has been sanded or polished to?

Like others, I can understand that Voss didn't like the process, but why didn't he move in instead of forcing his favorite line to work?  He is a versatile bowler who should have been able to change lines and hand position and try to improve his chances.  Giving up half way through the match (especially with Loschetter opening the next two frames) and whining about it afterwards didn't serve him well.

Interesting that the last two "line burners" were both Brunswick boys (Mika a few weeks ago).  No confidence in the games or equipment?  Have fun with that one!
