people sure seem to dwell on walter ray's 8-10 split. does anyone remember the 8-10 split left by tony reyes in the televised finals of the 2001 long island open ?

Greg, I do remember that. It was the only other time I remembering seeing a pro leave an 8-10.  Barnes 5-7-10 in Europe also.

Then you don't remember the other 8-10 WRW left, when using the Faball Hammer Wheel, the bright red ball, on TV. It was just before Faball closed shop and left WRW hanging and did not pay off the balance of his contract. WRW had just changed over from the Truck to the earlier, stronger rolling Wheel. Same situation: using too strong a ball on too light an oil pattern.
