walter ray williams, jr.
« on: August 21, 2005, 10:08:26 AM »
i see age isn't slowing walter ray williams, jr., down. he won a regional title this weekend in st. petersburg, florida. after beating ritchie allen 261-209, and 258-202 in the round of 16 he then beat jason hurd 268-210 and 234-189. he then beat steve wilson 279-212 in the round of 4. the title match was only slightly tougher as he beat david hungate 238-212. with the exception of hungate the players he defeated were pba national tournament winners.

Imagine that, the shot was on the gutter and WRW won.  That's the only condition he can dominate anymore...I can't wait for him to retire.

the only condition he can dominate on ? you must be referring to another bowler named walter ray williams, jr. the walter ray williams, jr., i know can and does dominate from anywhere on the lane. who else thinks so ? i've spoken with many pba players about his ability in this area and they all say he can do it all. who are some of these players you ask ? here are the ones i've talked to:

norm duke
brian voss
chris barnes
marshall holman
parker bohn III

you can't win 40 titles on the pba tour just being able to play one shot.

He is in complete control of his game, many people can play different lines easily, but walter can play every line like his A game because they are his A game. Another next great player like this is Chris Barnes.

Doesn't really matter how they oil the lanes anymore, players just burn a hole in the pattern.  The predominant strategy for beating him in a seven game match is try to compete from out with surface until you burn up the shot and make him move in.  You have no chance to beat him if he's pucking it up the gutter, but make him move in and he's very average because his ball won't hit.  Take a look at how good his ball hit on the U.S. Open show.

three of walter ray williams, jr.'s six major titles were the result of playing left of the 2nd arrow. in the 1998 bpaa us open he defeated tim criss while playing between the 3rd and 4th arrows. in the 2001 pba national championship he defeated jeff lizzi playing between the 4th and the 5th arrows. and in the 2003 us open he defeated michael haugen, jr., playing between the 3rd and 4th arrows. off the top of my head i can also remember several other tournaments where he won playing left of the 2nd arrow. in the 1996 showboat invitational he defeated brian leclair playing between the 2nd and 3rd arrows. he defeated dave traber in the 1995 rochester open playing between the 2nd and the 3rd arrows.

no less an authority on walter ray's ability is marshall holman. i spoke with him at the 1999 brunswick world tournament of champions in overland park, kansas. marshall said, and i quote, " there's not one area on the lane he can't dominate from !".

I'm down right sick of the people who see a pro throw about 10 games an entire season in the TV finals and think they know everything about their ability.

You don't see ANYTHING that goes on in the week.
You don't see ANYTHING that goes on in the practice session.
You don't see ANYHTING that they do in regional and local tournaments.
You don't see ANYTHING that they can do in their workout regimen.

Please God, some of you people need to f'n wake up and realize that ANY pro is 10x better than your preconceived notion of them.

How true.  Back in the day, didn't WRW used to be more of a tweener than stroker?

One thing I've observed about WRW is that he does have more revs than your average stroker, he just has the ability to throw the ball extremely fast in order to play up the twig or the second arrow. I may be wrong about that, however. Just a small observation.

And not to diss him or anything (I respect someone who has won 40 freaking titles), but I personally do not like his style. Just an opinion yet again.

But, do you respect him?  Or are you like morpheus and can't wait for the day he quits?  To be honest, I'm not his biggest fan, in general or style wise, but he definitely has my respect.

Here's my 2 cents. I think Walter Ray is the best ever. Just my opinion of course, he pretty much dominates on all oil patterns. His game matches up with Track pretty well also. I've seen him win playing inside as well as out as a couple of guys have pointed out. Sure he plays straight up most of the time but that's his best look. In last years US Open he should have beat Kovuniemi, he hit the Pocket 10 out of 12 shots playing in. The only reason he lost was bad pin carry.
