Need help with first PBA regional?
« on: March 15, 2004, 08:45:15 PM »
Last night I won a spot in the Rockaway eastern regional next month. I was +50 on pattern C which is pretty tuff. Can I expect anything differnt from a normal tournament from the regional? I think we will be bowling pattern D in the main tournament. ANY ADVICE for a new comer!

Pattern D - play out.  I'm on the left side and I am able to play up 5 pretty much the entire tournament.

Before you go to your tournament, practice.  Set goals for the tournament and understand that you are going to be going up against some pretty tough competition.  My goals for my first PBA tournament were pretty basic:  Stay calm and don't let bad shots get to me, have fun, and don't finish dead last.  Happy to say that I finished at -2 on Pattern B (which was a real beast), cashed and missed the cut by 14 sticks.

Needless to say, my goals going in are different now than they were then.

Good job in qualifying (though I've never heard of winning a spot in a regional before) and best wishes for when you go to the real deal.  Let us know how it goes.

Thanks PIN-Nut and Jabroni,
Pin on pattern C  I was using a 2000 polish Warp Zone (5x5)MB in the track and was playing up 3 with alot of forward roll to control the break. I see the whole key on bowling on these patterns is to TAKE THE HAND OUT OF THE BALL but you still have to be some what firm with it. I will try to get some practice on similar patterns. And diffently work on my spare game, I don't what Liquid Tension calling me a HACK from a couple of lanes down.

Jabroni playing in on pattern D does it depend on the surface?

Congrats on the qualifying.

Yeah pin,

I qualified in one several years back.

It depends on the house.  We had two sweepers
a few weeks before the tournament, and the house
was paying for two spots.

Next Level,

Congratulations on making the cut. Best of luck, but I doubt you'll need it. Be yourself and stay focused. Pattern D starts out outside nice (the one time I tried it), but how it tranitions, I couldn't say.

Make sure you're comfortable with the PBA's lane courtesy rule, which is not the same thing as two-lane courtesy.  It's difficult enough to concentrate on your game, without getting yelled at for screwing up the pace.

NextLevePS,  Make sure you are at the practive session, but take what you learn there with a grain of salt.  Forom my experience, the pattern almost never plays the same in practice and the actual tournament.  Use the practice time to get a feel for your ball reaction and the way the lane break down.  While the PBA courtesy is diferent, just relax, it really isn't that hard to get in the flow of it.

Good luck at Rockaway.
