What do you think about the US Open being on 3 days on tv?
« on: February 15, 2011, 10:19:30 AM »
With all the negatives about the PBA tour last 2 years at least they made something interesting I've never seen and no one has ever seen...match play qualifying on television including of course the finals on tv for the title as with this tournament and any other. Not the paid thing the PBA was using to watch match play on tv but actually on ESPN which quite certain this has never been done before. I've wanted this for a decade at least.

Now how to do it without basic cameras only used for internet and doing it on live cable tv will be interesting. This has been my favorite tournament to get into every year and looking forward to it. The winner of the tournament gets 80k.FYI the match play on Friday and Saturday look to be on ESPN 2 and the finals on Sunday is on ESPN:

Dave put the dates on a piece of paper and tape it to the outside of the tube to remind you to watch the show. I do this and it works every time. Hope this works. Medichal

Just watched the first show; wish I was down at Carolier in the audience.

Some notes:

-Ryan Shaffer gets no love

-PDW pulled his groin and has vowed not to pull out of the tournament

-Tommy Jones has a bone spur pinching a nerve in his hip

-Norm Duke had to strike out in both games vs Jones and Belmo but didn't

-Quite a few pocket misses

Looking foward to Saturday's broadcast but 10pm? Afraid I might fall asleep...

Words cannot describe the difficulty of that pattern they are bowling on.  Watch them blow the pocket up on every other pattern and then struggle to hit it 4 times in a row on that.  It is truly the shotmakers pattern.

First off, glad it was on.  BUT, the camera angles were terrible.  They showed the bowler too much as he was waiting for the ball to come back when they could have shown another bowler making a shot.

It was their first time putting a show like this on the air, so its hard to complain too much.  Hope they got some feed back so the next show can be better.

I thought the first show was terrific. This is one of the best ideas the PBA has ever done. I hope they do this again next season and perhaps even other tournaments.

Yes, the camera angles could have been better but it would be hard to have stationary cameras with all the people in the back but I think they did a good job. Having the bowlers just throwing shots all the time may have been overbearing on the eyes. It was nice they could just show a bowler doing nothing every now and then and tell about how that bowler is doing in the tournament or the season. Having attended PBA events with robin round match play I have to say it is one of the best live sporting moments I have witnessed. I'm looking forward to final match play tonight!

I think it's pretty cool myself.  It's different & gives bowlers their bowling fix.  If people don't like it they can switch channels, but at least it's available for those that do.  Kudos.

I really liked watching it, set my DVR and watched it when I got home, I've always heard how difficult the conditions get during match-play, now I've seen it.  I would like to see more of this.  I'm amazed at how composed all the players are even though they are bowling on some tough lanes conditions, something most of the general bowling public can't understand.

Enjoyed watching the show as well - re-enforces my long held belief that the "flat USB pattern" is the hardest pattern to score on - scoring would not be up over the years if we all still bowled on a flat pattern - new aggressive resin balls or not - actually since the new balls break the lanes down faster they may make the pattern harder:)

Yes, the first game in the first set I love that pattern - it's the inverted pattern it pattern it breaks down into that causes "all the fun."

To the poster talking about bad camera angles: The only way to fix that is have everyone on the same pair, or have four dead lanes between each active pair so as to get more straight-on angles from downlane. Frankly, I was pretty surprised they let ESPN have cameramen on the approaches at all.

Overall, I loved this. I'd love this to become the norm rather than the exception. It's like watching the early rounds of a PGA event and seeing guys jockey for position to be in the mix down the stretch. We really needed another hour of telecast last night, and/or more of the action from today (Saturday) before the cut to 6.

Thought it was awesome. I wish they would actually put more bowling on TV. Maybe even get their own channel going. Now I know they have Xtra Frame online but having their own channel on TV, I think would benifit the sport alot.
