What its all about
« on: December 20, 2007, 12:56:17 PM »
Many times I come on here and the most recent threads and it upsets me. To see the bowling community looking down and being so CRITICAL of the athletes that are out there every day. I think a lot of times we lose track of what this sport is all about. Its not about the controversy, technology, drama or conditions, its about the players and the community. But more importantly its about the passion and emotion.

Thats what makes this game so real to me.

I don't tune in every Sunday to see the newest equipment be thrown or the power players to hook the lane, but instead to see the emotions. To watch a new comer try to beat the odds, or see a hall of famer come through, maybe for the last time. But most importantly, to see their love and passion for the game. To see them celebrate after a win, or see their defeat after a loss, it makes it real.

Its not about one player looking better than the other, or a wiffed 10 pin or a 300 on tv, but instead see them express time and again their love and passion for the game. They don't do it for the money, because lets face it, if they wanted money, they chose the WRONG sport to do. Last place in the US Open in Golf is around the area $170,000 to WIN the bowling US Open is barely HALF that.

So remember, next time you want to criticize them for their flaws, try to think instead of what they bring to the game. We have all, at one time or another, dreamed about winning on bowling biggest stage. They are no different then you and me, and if you go on to be on a televised event, you don't want people to smack you around on a forum behind your back... would you?

Anyway, in honor of these guys I put some of my favorite clips into a video. Some great breaks, some heart breaks, but the emotion... is all the same.

Enjoy.

Actually, they interviewed him about it, he gave the kid a blank ball, and he used a 2nd one he had.

By and large I agree with your post. You can say something positive about someone you like you dont have to trash someone else.

But your money figures onr golf are wrong.

Last place is zero, in fact the last 80+ places the cash is zero. Last cash is around 10K two get to 170K you would have to place inside the top 10.

But over 100 players will make 1 million plus in golf this year.

I noticed that too Joe...the figures are off but the point is still valid.

Last to cash in golf pays the same as second place in our normal events.

Brian,

Thank you for posting your topic. I am a PBA member, even though you have not heard of me yet. I am on the East region tour trying to work my way up to exemption. I've been bowing since I was 4 years old. You my friend have hit the nail on the head. I have often said that if I picked up a golf club instead of a bowling ball when I did, that all my financial troubles would be non existent. However, maybe not all, but most of us out there that are trying to bowl for a living and even the casual league bowler are playing this sport for one reason and one reason only. The thrill of victory! The thrill of achieving a goal that we have worked so hard to accomplish and once we do, the adrenalin rush that you get is so much better then any drug that you could ever put into your body! Funny thing, my wife just became introduced to this feeling the other night in league. She rolled her first 230 game. Once it was over and I congratulated her, we were sitting in the back and she said I can't get my heart to stop racing. I looked at her and said, "that's it...that's why we bowl, for that feeling that your having right now." By the way, she's only been bowling 3 years now, I look for her to make her professional debut in about 6 years form now!

So again Brian, thank you for your post, if more people out there understood this very concept the world would be a mush better place to live in!

I agree that the reason I bowl is for the passion of the win.  I like to compete and it feels great when I get rewarded for the hard work.  I never like to trash anyone, although the guys with the better than thou attitude annoy me.  I respect our PBA guys and still get excited when they come to town (even though I know some of the guys out there).  It all boils down to respect.  we as bowlers forget to respect the game.

Mark, good luck out there.  Hope to see you on tv soon.

Awesome video man, I agree with what you're laying down and I get the set up of Ernie going nuts after Peterson stones the eight, but a movie on the awesome emotion of the sport and it's athletes starts with such a stoic reaction from Schlegel made me laugh.  I knew what was coming though so it was all good.  Obviously took you some time, good work.
