PBA.com - Jon Brandon leads the 2007 PBA Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium

Reno Gazette Journal (RGJ.com) - Brandon leads qualifying at the National Bowling Stadium

PBA.com article...

Jon Brandon averaged 227.67 over the first nine games of qualifying Tuesday to take the lead after day one of the 2007 PBA Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium.

Brandon, who is currently fifth in the PBA West Region standings, leads the 56-bowler field heading into the final nine games of qualifying. One of two Majors on the PBA Regional Tour, the event features nine bowlers from each of the PBA’s seven regions. The winner will receive $10,000 and a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions in January, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour.

The 32-year-old Brandon (Santa Clarita, Calif.) is looking for his first PBA Regional Tour title following three career second-place finishes. He used a conservative approach Tuesday and a late change in strategy to take the lead.

“Basically, I just tried to play the lanes as straight as possible for as long as possible. I tried not to cover as many boards throughout the day and just tried to play the lanes straight and direct,” Brandon, who had a 2,049 nine-game pinfall, said. “It worked out the first six games but in games seven and eight it went away and I shot 180 both games. Then I made a big move and played way inside and shot 270 the last game. If I had moved in a couple games earlier I could have scored better, but you take what you can get.”

Thomas Hess (Urbandale, Iowa) is right behind Brandon in second with 2,004 while Eddie Graham (Centerville, Ohio) is third with 1,979. Tom Daugherty (Tampa, Fla.) is fourth with 1,979 while Don Allen III (Vancouver, Wash.) rounds out the top five with 1,973.

The field of 56 will return Wednesday for another nine games before the field is cut to the top 16 for single elimination match play on Thursday.

Match play features a best-of-seven games Round of 16 followed by a best-of-five games Round of 8. The Round of 4 Thursday evening features single-game matches with the final two bowling a single match for the title immediately following.
