Title: Why no ball company commercials on the PBA tour?
Post by: Amazing on December 02, 2007, 03:50:10 PM
Now this doesn't make any sense to me. I haven't watched the tour in a while but decided today to tune in. Normal show but after about half the matches were done, I noticed something. I didn't see one, not one ball company commercial. Why not? Don't they pay some huge rate to be on tour with the PBA? Wouldn't you think that in between the wonderful Denny's commercial and Lumber Liquidators I would see "Storm The Bowlers Company" and a commercial about the new ball they have out.

You wonder why the PBA is dying. We have everyone going what was he throwing? Why don't the pros who are on tv that week tell us. Why do I have to hunt a ballreview site or a surf through 10 pages at the pba website to find out what someone was throwing. Insane that's all I could rant for hours on this subject but bottom line. Can someone answer to me why I do not see a ball company commercial on the PBA TOUR during bowling?

PS: To make this post a little more interesting make up your own slogan for a ball company you would like to see a commercial for. Here is mine:

Brunswick: Have a guy with a stand in Mexico selling new bowling equipment and have the product research guys go over and pick a ball up like they are checking for a watermelon. Once they find the one that is round enough they pay the guy 10 pecos and walk it to the plant. You then see them sand it put a big B on it and ship it. Then the slogan pops up "Brunswick, we make cheap bowling balls cheaper" . This post is made to answer a question and have fun don't get all holy on me IT IS FUN!!!!!

Thats a good question there I haven't really thought about it but I guess with companies making so many balls its hard to have a ball on commercial and if people see the pros bowling with something else they would be like "why buy this ball they are showing on the commercial if no one is bowling with it?" could be a reason??

But the Brunswick thing wasn't to help cut cost. Most people I don't believe know why they moved to Mexico but it wasn't due to cost or anything like that. Me and my proshop guy was talking about this just couple days ago and the proshop owner is the Brunswick ball rep for the south east or whatever so the source is very reliable but what was happening is something was going on with the warehouses in MI and up north and they were not putting the correct cores in the balls and all kinds of crazy stuff so Brunswick decided to move. Why Mexico? Who knows but it was because they had people screwing with the balls and they just wasn't going to have that, so they moved. It doesn't have anything to do with them being cheap or anything. My proshop guy said he got a few of those swapped core balls in at the shop so he had to kind of know what he was talking about.

Not to be rude about it or anything just letting people know whats really going on without all the assumptions.

I just thought the brunswick commercial would be funny thats all. I just wanted to know if anyone had any idea about the commercials. I mean anything just say the company name and that they support the PBA. The PBA should do that anyway. Shouldn't the ball companies that pay so much money to be out there get something for it. Could you imagine a Banger Bowling commercial. I would tune in just to see that. I would do one for Banger but I would probably get in trouble.

Yeah a banger commercial probably couldn't be played on ESPN if they had ones from them might have to move it to like skinamax (cinemax) lol

How are you calling me stupid? Thats coming directly from the Brunswick Ball Rep for this area. If you don't believe me fine but it is what it is. Until you know for sure why, don't start name calling.

As far as them cutting cost, yeah probably getting it done cheaper but thats not the point of them moving at all.

Amazing:  I was wondering the same thing about which ball they throw.  I can tell sometimes just watching, but it seems like ESPN puts the score sheet up  purposely when they are on the approach to cover any form of advertisement they might get out of a particular ball.  The company logos are already on their shirts so they can't cover that up.  I find out what the Storm guys threw by going on their website.  They usually have an article about the week's tourny & what the Storm nation members threw w/layouts & #ball.  But why can't the analysts tell us with a brief split screen as to what the guys are throwing during the match?  They tell us when they make a ball switch.  That they went w/something more aggressive or vice versa, but they don't tell us the actual ball.  Maybe they feel it will get of hand & it won't be fair to all of the ball company's.  I don't know.  But I don't see the problem w/it since so many of us "fans" are the ones that want to know.

There were many, many posts about the move when it was announced and every single time it was said to be cost-cutting.  Whatever their quality issues are (or aren't) now, I don't remember seeing many posts about questionable quality before the move.  People were generally enamored with the Infernos and Zones from that time.

A company finds out people are putting the wrong cores in the balls, they fire the employees.  If it's a systemic issue, they figure out what's going wrong with their manufacturing and inventory processes that's getting the wrong cores in the balls.  It costs millions to find a new location, begin construction, purchase equipment, change your distribution network, hire and train new people.  It costs thousands, maybe tens of thousands, possibly even hundreds of thousands to fire some jackhole who's doing his job wrong or to figure out what's wrong with your system and fix it.

Moving is a tremendous risk.  Whether you move to Mexico or Iowa.  It requires a huge investment of time and money.  You don't say "Jeez, we just keep putting the wrong cores in the balls, better pack up shop and go out for tacos."

I'm not saying your guy isn't a Brunswick sales rep, or that you are foolish for listening to him.  If he believes that the move was because of some faulty manufacturing, he's fooling himself or feeding you a line.

Amazing, I'm think the PBA doesn't allow the ball manufacturers to advertise unless they pay them an absolutely ridiculous sum of money.  The Women's US Open was not a PBA event; it was done under USBC sanctioning, and they had different rules on their advertising, etc., hence they actually allowed the bowlers to promote their ball companies.

NicholasE, I don't care what the rep told you.  Yes, they may have considered moving because of problems they were having with their old production plant, or whatever other reasons.  However, the biggest factor of that is still money!  If they were having problems with the production line, they needed to find a way to cut costs, right?  What's the best way to cut costs if you're going to go ahead and build a new factory anyway?  Move to Mexico.

Ok so with all this in mind if it was to cut cost and all that, people come on here and has said "Im not buying the balls because they are made in Mexico now" because they think it is bad quality but yet every pro on the tour that has big B on thier shirt is throwing a Twisted Fury. I don't think my proshop guy was throwing me a line. I hate Brunswick and have no intrest in any of their balls so its not like he was telling me this to make me want to buy or anything it was just simple conversation. But any reason doesn't make a difference because I didn't like them before they moved to Mexico.

Brunsewick moved becasue they wanted a new factory and it was more cost effective to do it in Mexico, so yes it was to increase thier profits, if someone was just making core mistakes they would of just fired those people.

Brunswick,Lane#1,Morich,Hammer,Ebonite,Columbia,AMF,Storm,RotoGrip,Track......they all leave ten pins, I swear after I try dynothane and lanemaster if the ten pin is still there I might begin to think it might just be
me...... (finally decided to add a signature)

the union had something to say about that

Big b move in my eyes was to bust the union and cut costs.  just to bust union they could have moved to 47 other continental states, but mexico provided a cheaper labor rate thus insuring a profitable business sooner on their investment of a new plant

I guess the big question ought to be; If it costs the ball manufacturer $140,000.00 to register with the PBA, what ht HOHA do they do with that money? You would think that the prize funds would be a lot bigger!!!!
And for that kind of money they ought to have some kind of representation, like media coverage, or an explanation on who is throwing what. If I were those ball companies I would be asking what do I get for my dollar.

The PBA does whatever it can to NOT show the name of the ball. They believe that is extra advertising. They do not want any of the announcers saying what the company is that the players are using. It is kind of BS, we, the ball companies spend A LOT of money is registering and they do what they can to really not support us. It is definately a catch 22. And it SUCKS.

I agree with the money they make the companies spend, they should be intitled to advertising on the show, the ball companies and thier influx of money helps keep it rolling

there was a time when brunswick, columbia 300, ebonite, and storm had commercials on tv. my guess is they're too expensive.

The PWBA use to do it and if I recall the PBA did for awhile. Like has been said already with the money ball companies spend they should get a little more in return.

As far as the Mexico move is concerened why can't we just drop it? This has been beat I don't know how many times. That poor horse is getting a little sore if not dead by now.

My feeling is that the fees are also not going down any time soon.  Its one thing to support our professional orginazation, but to flat out rape the ball companies for the registration fee currently in place is rediculious.  Think about Ebonite now paying to register 4 different ball companies.  Thats a bit over a half a mil!  Now that could start a whole different arguement so ill leave that as it is...

How many other sports have something like this in play in their professional orginizations?  Does it happen?  I honestly dont know.  In golf (Sorry i had to go there) do the companies have to register with the PGA to have someone use their balls?  I dont know...

There is one solution...ball companies form an alliance to boycott the PBA...if no companies register, what will they do?  Very Unlikely tho...

This topic can go in so many different directions...im just going to stop here

Agree. I have old vhs video tapes with commercials from columbia 300 for the cuda/c, the fish swimming at the rack under the water, also the commercials with ozio and husted. Brunswick had their commercials with the "get in the zone" then again later with the "trick shot" commercial (ripped off from the AMF Cobra commercial in reality) I remember seeing most of them during world team challenges than pba broadcasts however.

In golf, those that are exempt do not pay entry fees. They pay, I believe it is either $100 or $500 a week which goes towards the pension program. The prize monies are paid by the sponsors. All of it.

It was Ebonite's chose to buy Columbia and Track. Do not feel sorry for them. Brunswick pays through the nose, as well as supplying the lanes and machines for arena shows, as well as lane machines and oils. That's part of being the official sponsor of the PBA. The PBA is a necessary frickin evil.

Agreed, but it was also Brunswicks choice to become the official lane maintenance people of the PBA (unless they were "Forced" to)...so we cant really feel bad for anyone...After all is said and done Big B prolly puts out more than Ebonite but no one knows except for the companies themselves...not to mention what the companies pay their staff players.  And your right Ebonite didnt have to buy C300 and Track, thats why i said id leave that one alone

Nessecary Evil is about the best way ive ever heard this whole thing described...good choice of words Ric!
