Why doesn't it make sense? The schedule of telecasts were released well before the tapings. Everyone knew when these events would be shown. The finals were taped at the end of the WSOB. The idea was to get all the bowlers in one spot, for an extended time to run multiple tournaments. Saves travel expenses for the players, and the PBA. Also, they taped all the finals over a few days at the end, that saves ESPN time and money, which the PBA pays for, again saving the PBA money.
The only BS is you for creating controversy where there is none.
And Greg Hoppe, what year are you refering too? 1970, 1950? Times change, the PBA is changing with it. And in this difficult economic times, they are doing what they need to survive. I see nothing wrong with that.

Why not show them each week or after each tournment is done..
I imagine they are still running a tournament a week.. just all at the same place..

You are not understanding what the PBA was doing. They ran a different tournament each week, but only to the point where they had the 4 finalists. The starting on Sept 5th (I think), and over the course of the next 2-3 days, they ran all the finals. This way ESPN only needed to travel once (saving costs) and they could film all the finals live, just at the same time. Remember the PBA has to PAY ESPN to do this, for broadcast time, etc. So this in turn saved the PBA money, and it saved the players money. I am sure they got better room rates at some sort of an extended stay place or from Motel 6 for the length of time most were staying there, and no travel costs for like a month. With econimic conditions as they are, this was a great time to do something like this. If the PBA can start showing a sustained profit, maybe more sponsors would jump on-board as well. Not too many companies like to sponsor something losing money.

got you.. makes sense..
I wonder how the pros like it?.. cause if you are on a roll one week.. you may not have that same mojo going on 5 weeks later when you have to come back and bowl the final..

There have been a lot of pro's to say they loved it and it did save them money. Now they can do other tourneys or contract obligations which is good for them since leagues are firing up.

One problem guys, WHO THE HECK IS GOING TO WATCH NOW?
I understand E.S.P.N. is a company trying to make money, and so is the P.B.A., so localizing the tournaments to eliminate excess travel, thusly saving on big expenses, was a decent concept.
Problem is, they had all of the tournamens virtually back-to-back, then decided to telecast them at a MUCH later date. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of bowling is going to find out who won, that's the secret thats too big to keep.
As an example of the stupidity of this, what if the N.F.L. decided to localize and play all of the Monday night games at one time, at one venue, taping them for broadcast at the appropriate time during the season. Do any of you REALLY think that would work?
Think nobody would find out the winners prematurly? Think it wouldn't effect the standings, or the "unofficial" world of bookmaking? Think fans wouldn't care?
I understand the concept of the W.S.O.B., but having multiple tournaments with multiple winners, then expecting the very fans who love the game not to find out until months later and avidly await the broadcasts, was not realistic on their part and will end up costing them in the long run, I believe.
E.S.P.N. makes much revenue from advertisers, but, who is going to advertise on a show whose limited fan base already knows the outcome of and many of them won't be watching because of that?

Some People don't like the missed frames or the making the pros wait during commercial breaks but there is something great about watching a live broadcast.

EXACTLY! I love bowling, heck, I used to plan my saturdays aroung the P.B.A. tour telecasts so I wouldn't miss them. And I STILL try not to miss very many, if I can figure out when and where they are coming on.
But, now that I already know the winners, where is the suspense of watching? Where is the anticipation of hoping "my guy" can win, when I've already known for weeks he doesn't?
And, as for making the pros wait during commercial breaks, ever watched a pro football game? What do you think the players do during those T.V. breaks?

jorge300, in case you weren't aware of it the pba wasn't founded until 1958.....there is no way i could have been referring to 1950.
change in itself is not necessarily a good thing. watching taped tv finals is a change and it's not for the better. for a sport hoping to get into the big time you need live televised championship rounds.
-
All you fellas are bowling purists. The PBA is NOT trying to reach you and hasn't for awhile. Just like the PGA is NOT trying to reach the golf purist. Hense when even Tiger is out of the tourney they still show him.
Does that make sense?

No sport targets the sports purists for two reasons . 1 they will always watch no matter what(but complain the most). 2 there is so few of us.

Sports doesn't target anyone.....sports entities(leagues..athletes/agents) sponsors/commercialism/networks figure out what demographic will watch them and spend $$$$ on their telecast. You've been left behind long ago you just didn't know it.

I agree with you about watching the live match...
as far as the waiting.. an NFL player waiting to come back from a commerical during a timeout and a bowler tossing 6 in a row and then waiting 2 mins until he can throw another ball is a little different...
The waiting affects the bowler a little more I would think..

REALLY.........NFL game is 3 hours in length sometimes longer bowling 3 game finals 1hr to 1 1/2 hrs max. While I may know the outcome I still want to know what happened to get there. I would rather have a recorded finals and still have the PBA than no PBA at all.

Dealying a finals is hardly a new thing...look at teh WSOP and the final table of the Main Event being shifted to four months after the final nine were determined...
And no, nobody in the poker world really seems to like it except for maybe Harrah's since they came up with the stupid idea.
Would really like someone KNOWN in the poker circle to pull a Randy Lightfoot after winning the thing...

Michelle,
There is a slight difference. They aren't actually playing the final table until November. But you bring up a valid point which could be used for both sides of the arguement. Harrahs moved the final table to November because of the ESPN airing of it, they thought more people would watch if they didn't know the winner, backing up Juggernaut and others point. But I counter that and say poker grew into the phenomenon that it is, even though the finals were taped and people could find out who won ahead of time. That didn't stop people from watching the shows. And the activity/sport grew exponentially in that time. Will bowling do the same no, but I don't think the taping of the finals is the bad thing that some proclaim it be.
Also, I think one other reason for the change in the WSOP was money, specifically PPV dollars. If the Final Table was set to run at a certain time, in the future, they were now able to put it on PPV and give people time to buy it. In the past, you would have had to follow along to see exactly when the tournament got down to the final 9 and then the final table was the next day, not a lot of time to buy in if you wanted to. Plus in the years the tournament grew, the schedules were changed drastically with multiple day 1's and day 2's that would have altered when people were looking for the final table, etc.

knowing the end results wouldn't affect whether i watch or not. i study how the pros bowl on tv, the transitions, ball changes, spare shooting all that. it's the journey that counts.
having said that, live telecasts are far better to me, and not because i wouldn't know who won already. the sense of excitement of watching something live isn't there.
