Title: Will Carmen Make it?
Post by: DanH78 on January 27, 2005, 12:18:15 AM
In case you don't remember, one of the all time greats, and defending champion, Carmen Salvino was granted the exemption.

So where do you think he will place?  Even though I know it won't happen, it would be awesome if he made the show.

He will finish in the bottom 4. I know he was a great bowler and am sure he still throws it better than most of us on this forum, but he is bowling against the greatest bowlers in the world today.. I am afraid the technology of bowling today has more than likely passed him by..

There was a great article in a local paper recently (Dan, you may have seen it, it's in the Sun-Times, don't remember when it was) regarding Mr. Salvino, stating that he's been training for quite awhile for this tournament, and he's planning on competing with the big boys.  I think he will make the cut, but it'll be close.

He's been working out at Les Zykes' house (Beverly).  I would assume Les has been helping him.  I think he'll either make the cut or be within a few of 32.

I'm not so sure that technology will have passed him by.  Remember, Carmen Salvino was/is one of the innovators in ball design.

2 games and he averaging 150's I don't see it happening fellows.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.
Now that I am back and my Saws are sharp again, I am ready to cut some wood.

No, he won't even be close.

Rags,  maybe back in the day of yellow dots and the black angle he was a big innovator, but not anymore with the equipment coming out today..

I don’t think technology has past him by but father time has.

Carmen did lots of work for one of the ball companies fairly recently - I think it might have been columbia.
Ball technology has definitely NOT passed the man by.

However, with ball speed being a huge factor on today's tour, opportunity may have.

I also don't get it.  Lizzi has one of the best physical games out there.  He's been touring for a long time, it's not like he's nrevous.  How do you go from 240's one day to 'buck 80's the next?  I thought the tournament pattern would at least be simmilar to the PTQ.

Well he must have gotten back on track, cause he slipped into the bracket in 31st.

Carmen finished where I said he would finish (in the bottom 4). He was a great bowler in his time, but the game of today is just different. He could still beat me with his eyes closed, but not the best bowlers in the world anymore.

Hey, give some kudos to Jeff Lizzi, he pulled his head out his butt the second 7 games of qualifying last night and made the top 32 match play. I look forward to seeing how he does today..

I think Lizzi's biggest problem is that he's a strong guy, whose natural game is to throw hard and hit up on it.

I watched an old tape yesterday, of a match between Lizzi and Patrick Healey, Jr.  As the oil dried up, it was more and more difficult for Jeff to keep his ball on the right side of the head pin, while Healey's soft hand allowed him to keep it in play.

Of course, I haven't watched him bowl in ages, so perhaps he's changed his game a bit...

Well, He finished 64th, but somebody has to finish last.  Averaging 193 on a PBA shot at 71 is nothing to sneeze at though.

I don't know what ball technology stuff he's done lately, but I remember in the early/mid 90's he was heavily involved designing and testing balls with a ball company that released 3 or 4 high quality balls, but being a smaller company they couldn't get through the first few years.

[on edit] I just looked it up, the company was called CSI (I think he should sue CBS for for copyright or something).
