Women at Tour Trials...
« on: May 22, 2004, 08:57:50 PM »
Browsing over the roster for the upcoming tour trials, I noticed a few women's names, most noticeably Kelly Kulick.  What do you think their chances are? Kelly's got game, I think she's got a good shot, I'm not familiar with the others.

It looks like that a lot of the big names have decided they're better off doing something else rather then trying the tour.

It's a lot different bowling against 50-60 of the world's best than the 10-15 member women's club.  Then again, if you make it through the trials, you've got $32,000 guaranteed.  I'm surprised more aren't giving it a shot.

Consider this for a moment...there were several members who pretty much took the off-season off and did other stuff besides maintaining their game at the top levels...some play golf, others have kids (CDB).  We had no tour, and then on March 31st, the PBA reverses their course and decides to let the women bowl.  In roughly 8 weeks, any women wanting to bowl the Trials had to get the 5 regional events in (and don't forget about the lost week with WIBC Queens).

Not only is that a lot of schedule shifting (especially since it would mean jumping regions for many to get five events) but it also required learning new patterns in order to be competitive.

We've seen Tennelle and Kendra very nearly pull off wins in their respective regions, and my guess is that you will see more of the women competing in the PBA regional events over the next year.  However, the general consensus seemed to be that it wasn't worth rushing the process to bowl the Trials this year.

I see three women's names on the list:

 Missy Bellinder Fullerton Calif.
 Kendra Gaines Orlando Fla.
 Kelly Kulick Union N.J.

I've never seen Missy Bellinder bowl, so all I can say is, between Kelly and Kendra, I think Kelly will finish higher in the standings.

Over five days, on five different patterns, I think Kelly's game will stand up better than Kendra's, and better than a lot of the guys.  Many of the guys will be feast or famine, depending on the pattern, while Kelly will be a contender every day.

That said... I don't think her chances are too good, competing against the likes of Tim Mack and Brian Kretzer.

But hey, ya never know.  I think it would be awesome for a woman to make the exempt tour, and right now, Kelly is better equipped than the rest of the gals to compete with the guys, IMHO.

Actually, I think that Kendra has just as much of a chance as kelly. 2 very different games, but if the tour trials are anything like what they had on the tour this year, Kendra should do just fine.

I would compare Kendra's game to that of Jaros'. Most of the time very direct, great control, highly technical.

2 things I've seen beat Kendra regularly:

1) Tight lines. Once she loses her line, she struggles to get it back on TV. Many times I think this is caused by #2.

2) She beats herself. Kind of like Barnes on TV, the mental game is shaky at times.

I really hope that both of them can make it though. I would love to see 2 of my favorite bowlers back on TV.

(I didn't realize I missed watching the PWBA so much until now).

Yes - Missy certainly does.

I heard a rumor that they dropped the 5 regional requirement. Don't know when, don't even remember who told me. But maybe more women will be shoeing up...

My money is on Kelly, however.

If the "5 regional rule" is dropped, it wouldn't surprise me because entries are pretty slow for the Trials.

mumzie,  if they have changed the 5ervrnt rule, it was in the last few days.  In reading an article posted on the PBA page dated 5/20, it mentions that Kelly is on standby since her 5th event is the RPC the week before the Tour Trials and the mentions the 5 event requirement.

At last count (a day or so ago), there were almost 100 people on the roster.  I don't think they anticipated receiving any more entries than that.

Zack,
Why do you think Kelly is not competitive with the guys?
Just curious - not looking to start an argument or anything.

This is slightly off topic, but right now at the PBA Regional Players Championship Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Cathy Dorin-Lizzi are kicking their hubby's arses in qualifying.  Jeff Lizzi has already withdrawn.  These are their scores after 12 games.

106 Dorin-Ballard, Carolyn - N. Richland Hills 2407
129 Dorin-Lizzi, Cathy - Sandusky, Ohio        2370
138 Kulick, Kelly - Union, N.J.                2356
181 Ballard Jr., Del - N. Richland Hills, Texa 2292
293 Lizzi, Jeff A. - Sandusky, Ohio            1088 - WD

I think Del, Cathy and Carolyn were all on the same squad, not sure about Jeff and Kelly.

However, the numbers all mean the same thing...all five would miss the RPC cut if they were cutting after two blocks.
