Womens series

I find it interesting that the PBA is no longer requiring membership for the ladies that qualify for the 2007-2008 women's series.

I'm sure 8+ of the 16 who will qualify are probably already members but you would think in order to bowl in a series of events sponsored by the PBA that they would require membership.

Well, the PBA doesn't require you to be a member to bowl either the PTQ or regionals, either.
I believe that I read that if you made it to a certain point, you had to join to continue.
Don't remember exactly, though.

True on the entry to the PTQ or Regionals you don't have to be a member.

But if you cash you have to join to bowl again in a calendar year.

Here the 16 qualifiers get into at least 4 different tournaments with $1800 minimum payout $10,000 to the winner.

I don't have a problem with them not joining to TRY and qualify but once they have qualified then I believe they should join.

Seems like if you are assured 4 cashes in PBA sponsored events that you should have to join the PBA.

I'll throw my opinion in.

I don't mind that they don't have to get their membership. Why qualify and join for only four tournaments? My wife is really happy about that too. She plans on going and I really believe she has a better than average shot. By joining the PBA, it would of eliminated alot of the things she bowls now for a period of time.

Do believe the PBA is looking at the whole picture. There is a bunch of girls that are good that won't join. So they would only bowl the US Open part without paying the additional money. I'm sure they would like to see Asbaty, Pluhowsky(sp?), etc qualify and bowl the four events - especially when there is going to be tv involved. Why market women's bowling if you can't put the best product out there?

I do believe the PBA is making a wise decision here. If they build this up to a 12 - 16 tournament season - then the women should have to join.

Just my opinion...

The reasoning behind this is that if Diandra, Shannon, Tennelle, etc...make it out of "tour trials" and they are PBA members they will no longer be eligible for Team USA. They have been debating for the last year to allow PBA members to bowl for Team USA, but i dont think they really want to open that can of worms. I'm sure the powers that be have been putting the heat on the PBA to allow these women to bowl without having to join.

My question is this : How can you have a Womens Professional Bowlers series when all of the women arent professionals ??? This isnt fair to CDB, Kelly, Liz, etc.... I think a choice has to be made, just like the men have had to make. If you want to bowl, you have to face the consequences and join

Jeff - my opinion exactly.
But here's what's going to happen -
if they make it so women have to join after they qualify, they're going to complain that they can't participate in the other events, so they won't bowl the qualifier. And then, if there aren't enough events to keep the women that have joined happy, there's another source of complaints.

If they keep it so that women don't have to join, then they aren't really professional bowlers, are they? So if some don't have to join, all should be able to have amateur status.

Sigh.

After running a womens scratch tournament event for 2 years, and bowling PWBA regionals for quite a while, I've realized that when it comes to elite women's bowling, there is NO right answer. You're darned if you do, darned if you don't. Organizers have to make the decisions they feel are right, and STAND BEHIND THEM. Women will either show up or they won't.

Women bowlers at this level seem to want it all. I don't blame them. They deserve a viable tour, and opportunities at amateur/international competition. But they're not going to get a viable tour if they're not willing to step up and make the committment. Unfortunately, it's a committment that's hard to make without a viable tour. So, it's a Catch-22.

I hope they can resolve it in my lifetime.

I think they will make them join next season if this is successful. It's just that for so few tournaments this year it wouldn't be worth it to anybody to join for only 4 tournaments. What they need to do is bring in interest and bring in bowlers . You can't turn away people when you barely have enough to start. The PBA is still so far in the red that they can't Take any huge chances and start a whole second tour. That is why they are running these four tournaments as a test.

Hey, Kimbo - long time no post.
I couldn't agree with you more!

Good luck in your new career - I hope to see you back out there soon.

Honestly why would many of the women just drop their lives to go bowl in a series?  There are no promises of anything beyond these few events.  As Kimbo said, only those who are in a financial position to drop everything will compete.  I am sure it will be a good event, but not up to par to truly represent the sport, nor represent the true quality of the women's tour.
