Does Bowling have it's "Tiger"???
« on: March 09, 2008, 04:41:14 PM »
Are the bowling writers going to get ahold of this one and play it up? bowling could have their equivalent of Tiger in Rhino -but they need to take advantage of it.
Will they do it? Email all the writers and magazines and ask them to do whatever they can...

Bowling should be able to market itself fine with what is there without being obsessed with finding a Tiger Woods

I would agree with that statement - except it can't.

Unfortunately, the few real enthusiasts, like folks on this board, don't ocmprise enough of a market to drive the popularity of the sport.

Well said...only thing I disagree with is that I don't consider Federer as dominant as Tiger only because to Tiger's goes up against A LOT more players for 4 straight days and Federer plays one guy at a time...

quote:
There will never be another Tiger in this generation.  Tiger is one of those once in a generation athletes that simply dominates his sport (Federer being the only other one currently).  Hockey doesn't have one, baseball doesn't have one, football doesn't have one.  Tiger (and to a degree Federer) is the pinnacle of today's athlete.

Actually, while we may not like knowing who was going to win, bowlings hay day on TV was during Earl's dominance.  They guy was on TV basically every single week.  While WRW is great, Earl piled up his stats over a much shorter period of time.

People like to watch winners, and the casual fan will usually be a bandwagon jumper cheering for the dominate player of the time.  Bowling has no such player, and then you see a bunch of not so good looking guys on TV all the time, makes it tough for the casual fan to continue interest.  Yes they are great bowlers, but looks do count in TV.

For the record, the last completely dominating, game changing athlete was...Michael Jordan.  A generation ahead of Tiger.

Hockey hasn't had one since Gretzky.

Baseball hasn't had one since probably Mantle or DiMaggio or Ryan.

Football hasn't had one since probably Jim Brown.

Tennis has one in Federer, but in bracket tournaments as was pointed out he only faces one person at a time, not everyone all at once.

Bowling could have one, there's nothing keeping it from happening.  The real question is, who's going to be the one that eventually does it?  Who's going to be the one that combines WRW's dominance with Barnes' consistancy, Tiger's type of mentality and Page's charisma.  In some ways the PBA is trying to market Rash as that person, but he won't be unless he matures very quickly so as to have the mental toughness of a Tiger Woods to really break through like that.

Actually, Barnes could still be the guy, with his consistency, if he gets over his mental hurdle (he's won his last 2 TV appearances).  I also think he would relax and not come accross so stiff and cocky as a result.  The pressure of TV combined with his repeated near misses would affect anybody.

Barnes is too old though.  To be considered "bowling's Tiger" one would need to come in and completely dominate at a young age the way Tiger did, then keep it up throughout his entire career the way Tiger is.  Barnes is probably more like "bowling's Clemens," very good and very consistant, but not enough titles to be completely dominant.  Page or Rash could potentially do it, Rash has won 2 titles (if I remember right) already and Page has made 5 shows, but Rash hasn't made enough shows and Page hasn't won enough of his shows.

Both would need to overcome another hurdle to start to run away from everyone else, but it hasn't happened to this point.  It might within the next year or two, but as of yet it hasn't.
