I was talking with Corey Kistner (the PBA tournament director) this weekend. He said that the Japan Cup will be broadcast as the "first" event of the season, with the actual tour competition starting the following week.

I've got a couple of questions, but I can't get a word in edgewise on PBA.com for all the people moaning about bowling dying off and the need for a standard ball...

1) What happened to the Dexter Final Frame event? Gone?

2) What's the format of each individual telecast? Same as last year? Stepladder finals? No more trick shot stuff?

It was a one-off event.  They may decide to do it again, but probably the numbers weren't that great (they showed it Christmas Day, for pete's sake) and it just isn't worth doing.  The players may have complained about it as well.

Some of them are stepladder like the DW (besides the US Open and the Masters, which are always stepladder), most of them are the usual Round of 4 match play.  There was an article on the PBA site that listed which would have what format, but I couldn't find it in the four seconds I spent looking.  I don't remember if the stepladder finals are four-man or five-man, but I'd expect four-man.  I also expect the trick shot stuff to return as well.

Thanks. I was hoping they'd ditch the trick shot stuff and give us another match instead.

Yeah the trick shots get kind of old fast.  I would rather see regular bowling.  Well either that or just let Parker Bohn and Norm Duke do trick shots the whole time.
