Dallas NOT a sport condition...
« on: July 13, 2003, 10:26:43 PM »
from the PWBA Notebook
quote:

LANE REPORT
This week’s tournament features a 42-foot oil pattern at 19.36 milliliters. The condition is not a Sport Bowling pattern. The innovative oil brand applied on the synthetic lanes at the Don Carter All-Star West Lanes is a new product called Prodigy. Prodigy was chemically engineered to use the best elements of Offense and Defense oils, however it is not a combination of the two brands.

Not a sport condition??? Seems strange, when the rules say the ladies bowl on a sport condition.
Anyone got more info?

And what the Hell does Offense and Defense mean !?!?!?!?!?  Of course wev'e been hearing it all season long out of the Dorin sisters with NO explanation?!?!?!?!   Anyone ??

I saw the re-run last night......looked like a long, but lighter pattern....they were still using strong stuff equipment though.......

Revs,

Offense and Defense are Brands of oil either manufactured by Kegel or Brunswick. To early in the morning for this much thinking.

Mumzie whats the big deal. It played alot like most with the outside being OB and inside drying up. A while back John Jowdy made comments about the Women's tour and Sport shots in BTM mag, you should read.

Thanks, but no offense LHT, that doesn't tell me anything really. Is offense thinner, defense thicker, etc ,etc.....what can you expect from these oils ? etc.......ya know , that kinda stuff ...And don't give me that TOO EARLY stuff, I've been up since 5:30 !

From the Kegel website:

quote:
Defense Oil:
Microscopic particles actually bond to the lane surface which, when combined with mineral oil, give Defense its slick characteristics. The amazing durability results because the bowling ball only picks up and carries down the mineral oil leaving the particles behind to protect your heads. Defense also minimizes your carry down and ball-calls because KBT developed a mineral oil that is tacky to the touch. Meaning you will visibly see carry down past your oil pattern, but because the mineral oil is tacky ball reaction will not change, which is what matters most.

Offense Oil:
If you liked Defense, then you'll love Offense! KBT decided to take a very bold step in the creation of its latest conditioner Offense. KBT actually developed the conditioner primarily around customer feedback. We learned that lab tests are very valuable in formulation design, but nothing is more valuable than what customers using the product have to say, People Like You!
Offense was field tested for over 6 months in 30 different test centers. These test centers varied in the type and condition of their surface, type of lane machine being used, their geographical location, type of pin-setters running, and most important the type of bowlers in their centers. The result is a product that allows for all styles of bowler to have predictable ball reaction right from the start. We could go on to tell you all the other great things about Offense like it holds up longer, doesn't carry down, and doesn't get dirty, but you've heard it all before! Instead we'll prove it to you by sending you a free sample to try for yourself!

So what does that tell you? NOTHING

But seriously. From what I've heard, Defense is a much slicker surface than offense. It takes longer to carrydown, however when it does carry down you're in for a slick night, because there's no biting through it.

Offense on the other hand is not quite as slick & will give you more of the "house shot" feel. Offense oil begins to breakdown sooner than Defense, however carrydown will not kill a ball's reaction as drasticly. Offense also tends to transition more often.

The new Prodigy oil is supposedly the best of both worlds. It takes the slow transition of defense & the playability of the offense & puts them into one oil.

Mind you, everything I've just written is heresay combined with my own observations. The house I bowl at uses Offense oil & I can tell you, it's nice stuff & carrydown doesn't affect the ball much, but the lanes are CONSTANTLY transitioning through a night of leagues. It would be nice to find an oil that doesn't move so quickly that I've got to change my mark every other frame.

Hopefully some of the other more "learned" bowlers will be able to chime in & give more info either saying I'm full of yoohoo, or supporting what I've heard & seen.

Frankly, the info provided by Kegel sounds like marketing mumbo-jumbo to me.

Lefty -
here's the big deal with the sport condition...
the PWBA is REQUIRED to bowl on the sport condition at national stops - it's a condition of their contract with WIBC.
And since WIBC advanced some of the money they'd earmarked for the PWBA A YEAR EARLY, seems to me that following that rule would be very prudent on the PWBA's part.

Very much so. That's why I'd like to get a chance to bowl on Prodigy instead of just taking their word on how amazing it is.

I have bowled on both Offense and Defense in my league house over the past couple of years, and I don't have anything good to say about either oil.  I absolutely hated the Offense, and the Defense carried down so bad that the center owner was more than happy to switch to another brand of oil.....the Defense carrydown was giving the mechanics fits, and the number of problem calls skyrocketed with Defense....of course, you have to remember that he was running 42 feet of Defense, which was way too long for such an oil.

Now Kegel has come out with Prodigy, which is supposed to be the best of both Offense and Defense.  I know that we are fixing to get a test run on the Prodigy, but I am not looking forward to it at all.....I foresee many problems with the Prodigy, if it is anything like Offense or Defense.

For my money, Neo Tac makes two of the best lane oils out there.  Their Black Gold and Black Gold HV (high viscosity) are two of the best oils going today.  The Black Gold does NOT carry down at all, even though you can see what appears to be carrydown on the backends.  The residue that does carrydown onto the backends doesn't impair the hooking capability of the backends.

What ever it was seems they did not have a good time on it.  Seems they all struggled.  A good game here and a bad one there.  I watched Michelle Feldman practice on it and she was having trouble.  Bunches of splits.  All in All I would rather watch the matches on tv for the commentary.  It was nice watching in person because you get to see, meet and interact with the bowlers.  It's like going to a silent movie except everyone claps on queue.
