Fall tour is canceled
« on: August 11, 2003, 02:49:07 AM »
My hubby just got off the phone with Falzone at home office.

2003 fall tour is canceled due to lack of operating funds.
They are pursuing other investors at this time.
Decision to be made in near future regarding 2004 events.

This just in from Jan Schmidt:
quote:

Hello to all, I am sorry for the delay in this communication as I was out of town on a scheduled vacation last week and spent a good part of that week on the phone working with a potential buyer that was looking to still save the fall tour.  We were on a deadline for all involved, particularly you athletes, ESPN and the host centers, plus the sponsors.  ESPN was working with us to provide additional time and each time we reached our deadline, they extended it for us.  We were hopeful that the potential buyer would secure everything from his end in time, but it did not happen because two of the host venues could not wait any longer.  A personal note was to be sent to all members in addition to the press release about the cancellation of the fall tour, however the decision came so late in the day that in an effort to inform the athletes of the cancellation first, the press release was quickly forwarded to all members.  I thought an additional update had gone out, but in the confusion it was missed.

Cathy's letter outlined pretty much where we're at, you have a good president.  There are still at least three options.  One is the investment group out of Florida that we were working with last week.  They still want to proceed ahead in an attempt to purchase the tour.  The second is a Ladies and Legends tour.  There are a lot of details that would still need to be worked out to make sure it would be a quality choice for women's professional bowling.  As Cathy mentioned, there are a lot of rumors out there regarding the Ladies and Legends, and as of this moment, none that I heard are true or confirmed.  It is definitely an option, but in no way is it a done deal.  The third option is just to close the doors and see if someone (probably the PBA) picks it up and runs a women's tour.  There is also another investor that has expressed interest that is still an outside chance.  Whichever way it goes, I believe there will be a significant professional women's bowling tour.

The WIBC would like nothing more than to take the tour, however at this time with their future in question they don't feel they can't do the tour and you athletes justice.

There are timelines on some things already in place and a decision regarding the future of the tour moving into 2004 needs to happen by September 1st.  I will make sure an e-mail goes out to you all by September 2nd with an update on the future.

I have accepted a position with WIBC.  It's Director of Tournaments and Marketing.  If there is a tour, it is likely that I will be involved on a sponsorship end from my WIBC position.  I'll be in the office this week and at home most of next week, starting with WIBC on September 3rd.  (phone numbers removed) It is with great sadness that I leave the PWBA.  It's where my heart has always been.  However, I, like all of you, have to look out for myself at this point in time considering that most of the staff has been laid off.  I'm excited about my new position and I'm sure I'll get to see most of you in my new capacity.  I will continue to promote a women's tour and you athletes at every opportunity because you are the best ambassadors for this sport and wonderful people.  I'll miss you all and thank those of you that lent your support over the years.  I hope we won't lose touch.

Best of luck to everyone.  Keep the faith.   Jan

I have not received "Cathy's Letter", but have requested a copy be forwarded to me. I find it interesting (but sad) that "most of the staff has been laid off".

I would agree. Several of the touring PWBA members have been welcome posters to this board, and I'm sure that several others are lurkers...

It would not be good form at all to make fun of these ladies that would probably knock your socks off on the way to victory, if they were ever to bowl against you head to head.

Mumzie, some would, some wouldn't...but these professionals deserve a better fate.  A failed organization -- no money (a marketing problem), when they could be marketed (as I have written before) and the marketing director is immediately hired...?   I think I need a drink. No.  I KNOW I need one.

"cathy's letter" should probably stay with the players. My opinion only.  Maybe she will make a public statement at a later time

While I would agree with keeping it with the players, not all of the players have seen it, which I think was mumzie's point.  The only thing that I got in my member's box was the one from Jan along with the short correction email.

Cathy's letter may have went to touring players only.  I'm not sure though.

I guess they jumped at the chance to hire her, what with the great job she did for the PWBA.

Ditto on that one.

Guess it's a good thing I have both a WIBC and ABC card.  I can always just carry an ABC card if Jan's skills carry over (and kill) the WIBC...

Thanks Barb, that's the answer!  Kuhn and company are using Jan to push through the USBC.  When the delegates hear that Jan is in charge of marketing, they'll realize that the WIBC is about to fold, and resubmit the proposal.

Looks like a shoo-in to me!

Much love for all of you gals.

Hopefully we'll see a viable alternative come to fruition soon.

(and hopefully have a tour stop in milwaukee too. )

In the meantime, if there's lobbying ot letter writing that can be done, let us know!! I know there are many people on this board more than willing to help you out.

I can only imagine what it would be like to dream of becoming a pro, fulfilling that dream & then watching someone else take it away. It's just not right.

Regarding Cathy's letter -
I have now seen it, and tenten is right. It will remain private for now.

However - if any of you folks have any ideas about womens bowling, and what might work in the future, please post them. I think the organization (or past organization) is ripe for them.

I still go back to where are the ball company's in this.  It could become very hard for them to sell their new ball they come out with every other week if they lose an avenue to introduce it to the public.  People like us know, but the average bowler may watch it on tv and go to the lanes.  They don't research or learn about the game the advertising means something to them.

Also while I am ranting.  Where is Espn in this.  They are getting decent ratings out of the ladies tour.  They should be paying them to bowl not the other way around.  Maybe if they got off their collective butts and started selling the tour to advertisers they would be making their money from the right people.  Do you think the NFL pays espn to broadcast their shows no way.  They pay them.

I could go on and on, but shoot this whole situation is stupid.  It isn't a bad product.  It is inablility to step up and take care of business.  I hope the right people step in and start and entirely new tour.

Andy

P.S.  I think it can be done and it will happen shoot look at it I went a whole post without being goofy or silly.

Forgot in my last post I mean no harm to any of the touring pros that make their living with the tour.  In fact you have my best wishes and hopes for a better tomorrow.

As I have stated time and again...I am and will be eternally grateful for the fact that John saw fit to fund basically out of his own pocket for the length of time that he did.  However, fresh blood is needed and not the type of blood that draws the shark feeding frenzy...I still believe that properly marketed, there is a viable product now just occupying space on the proverbial shelf.

On the personal upshot (so aptly pointed out in a PM), it does at least give some extra time for the hand to heal...

Michelle, I'm with you on this one for sure.  John Sommer went well beyond the point where most owners would have bailed out of the situation with the PWBA.  I have met John personally and talked to him at length, and I have a lot of respect for him.  I know that John did the best that he could with the situation that he was confronted with.....there just came a point where he could no longer fund the organization out of his own pocket, which is understandable.

I have to thank John for staying with the program as long as he did.  The well just ran dry.
