Jury still out???
« on: October 03, 2007, 10:33:45 AM »
Is it Nelson Burton Jr. that has mentioned a couple of times that the jury is still out on whether to switch to a plastic ball on spares?  That jury came back with a plastic verdict a long time ago.

When did he say that?  I've watched all of them and don't remember it.

I agree, that jury's voted.  And been upheld on appeal all the way to the Supreme Court.  Plastic, for sho.

...depending on the release you use for spares.  Im in with the Norm Duke camp of just changing release & freeing up a spot in the bag.

i'm sure you can make a strong case for either method. many old school players learned to totally flatten out a shot----this was a fundamental lesson. it's easier to change to a plastic ball than learn to change a hand release.

When your strike ball is plastic, it doesn't exactly make a lot of sense to switch balls to another plastic ball for spares.  However, on some of the old shows, they mentioned using a shinier ball for spares.  But still, plastic is plastic, and when all your balls are plastic, you don't have much choice but to flatten it out.

As for opening a spot in the bag, I've found that a plastic ball is just as valuable as any other ball.  I've used mine as my strike ball on several occasions, and plastic gives a look that reactives simply cannot.

I see many people using plastic for spares, some using their strike ball and flatten it out, other use a tamer reactive ball and flatten it out. I happen to fall into the last one. I use a Power Groove and kill the shot. To each their own on what they want to do.

There is no answer. Do what's comfortable for you. Some, like Ryan Shafer, used three balls: strike, tamer reactive and a plastic.

I just use a weak reactive ball and flatten my wrist out.  It opens a spot in my bag that a plastic ball would have otherwise taken.  By doing this, I can keep a weak reactive ball in there without having to carry to many to the lanes.  I've used plastic for spares before and just have never liked it.

Right now, my spare ball is my Roto Grip Neptune...also gives me a really good ball for when the lanes are dry...two birds with one stone.

The jury will forever be out on this one.  Like Ken said, you need to do what works for you.

I personally use my plasticCaptain Fireball! to shoot spares on either side.  Anything that leaves a 1 or a 5, I use my strike ball unless I'm trying to pick a 5-10 split (I'm a righty), then I throw my spare ball, and shoot the imaginary 2-pin.

I just found a rubber Connie Schwoegler ball on the ball rack of my local center and "borrowed" it.  I got it drilled to fit me and it's now my spare ball.

Every bowler has to decide for themselves what works best for them.  That being said, I made the switch to using my strike ball for everything three years ago (more for using a ball with the same feel every shot, rather than switching to a spare ball with a different feel), and my average has increased at least 15 pins, and I rarely miss any spares anymore.

I'm surprised you found a driller that would drill a rubber ball. I'd love
to use the one in my garage (my father's) but no one will re-drill it around
here.

Yeah, and look where that's gotten him.  Always a bridesmaid, never the bride.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go boil my eyes after thinking of Ryan Shafer in a wedding gown.
