Title: So, Is the PWBA Dead
Post by: card79 on January 12, 2004, 08:21:51 PM: Well nobody has said anything. Do these ladies just put there life and continuing career goals on hold waiting for somebody to decide or did I just miss the funeral.

The regional program is continuing and there have been a couple that were announced not long ago.

I hear Kimbo is thinking of training to be a nurse or a paramedic. Sounds like a good idea.

Post by: mumzie on January 13, 2004, 01:32:45 PM: The latest word on the PWBA is that Steve Sanders has purchased the name, and is currently working on the details with ESPN.

Our local bowling paper had an article stating that Mr. Sanders has been trying to put together a Ladies & Legends tour to give the Senior PBA players something to bowl. I haven't heard that directly from Sanders, but it seems like a good idea to me.

In talking with Pam Buckner and Kelly Kulick this last weekend, they both think the ladies tour will be starting back up this fall, bigger and better than ever.

I certainly hope so - I had finally decided to go out - last fall. Needless to say, I stayed home, and probably saved a LOT of money. But I would have loved the experience!

I miss watching the ladies, I've picked up lots of good tips watching them bowl.
Had a good friend try the Miller open in Omaha a few years ago and really miss seeing the PWBA bowl in person.

SOme of the greatest I have seen are the ladies on the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the pwba and can't wait for the return.

Another deadline has come and gone, with no word from Sanders or anyone else.

Maybe it is time to go find a new set of clubs to replace the ones that were stolen when I moved to Austin...

I know nothing about the broadcasting business, but I can't see why ESPN would be wavering on televising women's professional bowling. It's a known commodity with proven ratings, what's not to like?

Hmmmm... maybe it's Sanders they're not so sure about...

Keep your fingers crossed, looks like we're in for a bumpy ride!

This is the latest I have heard.

It isn't like the ratings were terrible. SHoot when the ladies used to have a tournament here in my home center they were a terrific ambassador for the game. The center was jam packed with people everyday. I think it is stupid. Maybe they need to get together as a group and create something. To many people tasting the soup is making it rotten for all.

Whoever comes in has to understand that it would take some time to pull something from the ashes...look at the time it took for the guys in Seattle to rebuild the PBA.

On the other hand, the PWBA members have been listening to the "all but done and waiting on the ESPN deal" since about oh, last September. I'm in agreement at this point with some that have opined that the Professional Women's Bowling Association needs to finally have the last gasp and allow something else to try and rise from the ashes that does not have the immediate and attendant baggage of the LPBT and the PWBA. I guess the reality of it all is that women's bowling just simply isn't marketable, except to those few diehards among us. I guess it's way too boring to compete for the casual viewer's attention. I suppose if they added the excitement of an occasional Carolyn crotch chop, a trash talking Kelly Kulick, a few well-placed Leanne F-Bombs, a tongue-pierced TenTen, a cheesy TV show set, and an exclusive all-exempt field of 16, we'd be in business. But none of that is ever going to happen. Well, at least not the cheesy set. Actually, they're all just too darn nice to make for "good" TV. God forbid, if one of them ever showed any self-enthusiasm or mild display of emotion in victory, they would have to apologize to the others for being so disrespectful and then give the loser a big weepy hug for support. Seriously, though, it's really a shame and I will miss it simply for what it was: The best women bowlers in the world competing every week and trying to make a living doing what they love.

Steve Sanders was not able to negotiate an ESPN contract that was acceptable in his goals to promote the PWBA. He has decided to no longer pursue the purchase of the PWBA.
Sad news for women's bowling. I think BJI is going to run a Q&A with Steve Sanders in the April edition.

Despite all the criticism the broadcast received, I so loved to watch the women bowl. Now all I have are my videos to view over and over.... Will be keeping my fingers crossed that something can be worked out.
