Title: This Be The Week, Yes?
Post by: seadrive on August 03, 2003, 09:30:30 PM
If I'm not mistaken, the PWBA is supposed to announce by this Friday whether or not there will be a Fall swing.  As it is, the "swing" is down to only three stops, pretty pathetic...

What are your guesses, will they fold their cards before or after "the swing"?  Anyone expect to see a knight in shining armor charge forward to rescue our fair damsels in distress?

I do know that the PWBA will be at Victor Bowl, in Victorville, CA, in September, for a pro-am, which I am going to try to enter.  139.00 gets you into the no-tap with the pros, and you get a free Storm Charge, which (before anyone asks) I plan to sell so I can get a BuzzSAw!!

I had the opportunity to meet a PWBA touring pro this weekend.  I asked her if she had heard any news on the ladies tour.  She indicated that she had just spoken with the home office and they told her that meetings were in progress but no other info was available.

From the PWBA site, announcing the cancellation of the first scheduled fall stop:
quote:
With the Bowl the Rogue Open removed from the Fall swing, the 2003 season would (emphasis added) start with the Storm Challenge, September 21-25, hosted by the Victor Bowl, in Victorville, Calf.

Sorry Dave, but the PWBA will only be at Victor Bowl if the Fall swing is not cancelled.  No tour stop, no pro-am.

I am bowling a regional this weekend. I "assume" that the announcement will go out as planned August 8th.

The bowlers I spoke with this past weekend at the Regional Players Championship were NOT hopeful for the fall swing. These players include many who are in a position to know - the "PWBA Millionaires" that were in attendance...

I, of course, am devastated. After many, many years of dreaming of touring, I've finally arranged my entire life around those 4 weeks this fall. Now the one in my own backyard has canceled, and it looks likely the rest will too...

Figures.

There is not really enough time, but I thought of something. Why couldn't all of the people like the idea of women touring and the telecasts get together and donate $5-$10 or more, and that would definately give them the $300,000 they need?

Just an idea. I mean, I know for sure I would donate money.

I've not been able to get confirmation, but I considered the source reliable that sent me the following:

Talked to Steve Sanders this week. He worked out a deal with owners of the lady's tour and there could be a Lady's and Legends tour. If things go like Steve hopes, we could have 20 TV spots. ABC, WIBC, Coastal Properties have all blessed the idea and are supporting with x amount of money. Steve is going to the Villages next week to talk about being the title sponsor. Steve is also setting on the some type of committee that has ABC,WIBC, Strike 10 and a few other people in bowling. Miller also sets on this board. It could be very interesting when Miller sees Steve. The meeting is next week also.

He hopes to have 20 tournaments. The Men and the ladies would bowl at the same time. The ladies would have there own prize fund and men also. First for the men would be $25,000 and the Majors $50,000. Steve said he would like to have 4 doubles tournaments also, $50,000 split 2 ways.

I won't be bowling this week but will be in Clarksville next week. I hope to have more info by then. It should be very interesting when Miller fines out that Steve owns the lady's Tour with some type of deal with Sommers.

The biggest concern I had as I read it was the continued involvement of Strike 10 in any plans going forward...seems to me that they were one of the factors that got us into the current predicament.  Stay tuned...

Mumzie, I can only hope we hear more details this week since Friday was supposed to be the deadline...what I copied here was all that I have to work with right now.

Talked to a friend on tour, she said it's not looking good. Sucks to think that the women have one less outlet to compete. Solid female bowlers are stuck competing against solid men bowlers more and more. Women and men both need to support the tournaments that are available, because we have less and less to bowl. I am speaking of NON-handicap bowlers. Think about it, bowling is rewarding handicap bowlers with an outlet and taking away from the ones who have worked to become good.

Michelle, any more news on the deal Steve Sanders was trying to put together?

In "Ladies and Legends", I assume the Legends are the PBA Seniors, correct?  That sounds very interesting!
