Marianne made a nice little charge as well...she was the cut number after the first block at -65.   Good to see that Tish is finally getting some breaks...she had absolutely no breaks go her way in Sterling Heights.

I should have just withdrawn early Thursday after I tweaked the hand again...I think it just is residual scar tissue that broke loose, but it definitely was a factor in the second block.  Not the way I wanted to go out for the season...

MI_2_AZ, yes, I'm referring to build-up around the previous injury.  Scar tissue is the best way to describe it, since it doesn't seem like a muscle or tendon tear and the symptoms like the previous fracture are not noted.  Since I'm not bowling summer leagues, I will have some time to take off and let it heal...future stops will be contingent on how it feels and also what happens after Rockford.

Michelle,

If you posted something about this tweak that you did on your hand in another topic, I missed it.  Is this causing you any pain when you bowl now?  Pain is the body's way of telling you that something is wrong.  I hope that you do get a chance to let it rest and heal and that you get the chance to see your doctor soon.  When is Rockford?

MI_2_AZ, since I came back from the fracture, there have been occasional twinges.  I really was not able to catch all of a shot until mid-May (a few weeks before I left for Michigan).  There has been a lot of swelling in the hand but generally no pain that accompanied that swelling...until Thursday...and that was why I could not bring myself to place poor performances at the Open and first round of Terre Haute on the hand.    

Keep in mind that it is marginally easier to take time off when you are not attempting to use the bowling to produce income (just as with other sports)...I also have a history of trying to work through pain, and it isn't limited to bowling.  It might also have been easier to walk away for the week if we knew for certain that the tour would continue to exist beyond this season...

Rockford is the event next week...we'll just have to see what happens with the tour after that.  I had hoped to shoot at least Dallas and possibly Memphis the week before that, and also was looking at the Mesa event.  With the way the hand feels, I have to say Memphis is out, and Dallas is questionable.  Mesa is questionable not knowing what is going to happen after the current swing.

Frustrating to say the least...

Michelle,

I remember that you said you were a Regional bowler but I did not realize that that meant full-time.  You're right, it is different when it is your income that is riding on your performance.  I hope that it is nothing major with your hand and I wish you the best of luck in Rockford.  Please keep us posted.

I will not be bowling Rockford (largely due to the hand, but also because of work piling up in the office).  While I did only renew as a regional member, it was because I was not in a position to bowl the full swing.  Regional members are entitled to bowl 3 national stops each season before having to upgrade.  I was willing to put the first couple of events over the past few seasons in the "learning experience" category, but the ventures this year were with the sole expectation of bringing home cash, not just for the experiences.

michelle, I'm sorry things didn't work out better for you the last couple tournaments.  My advice, for what it's worth, is get some medical attention for your hand-- a specialist if possible.  I've had a few injuries where I just waited for them to heal only to find out that they really needed some proper attention and they never did heal up right.  Don't take the chance.  I nearly had to learn to bowl left-handed.  It may have been an improvement--especially with those few free extra pins that lefties always get.

Michelle, I'm sorry to hear that the Memphis stop is highly questionable for you at this time.  I was planning on swinging over to Memphis to take in some of the action there, and hoping to get to watch you bowl there.  Maybe with some luck you will be able to make the stop in Memphis.  By the way, which house is the Memphis stop at this year....is it Cherokee Lanes by any chance?

with so muck talk about hand injuries I thought I would throw my experienced .02c in.

Even with gorilla like strength when I was younger, I managed to damage some ligaments/tendons in the back of my hand. this was do to an insane drilling and a ball driller to let me do it. that was 12 years ago.3/4 revese 1/2 away. fingers pitched 1/4 under. sapn about 1/2" to long. You should have seen the revs. I was avereging over 210 for about 4 months. afetr the injury I was never the same. I took a lot of years and refittings to not be in pain.

at any given time I can injury my hand bowling by simple letting the finger relax past parallel to my hand and be under the ball. I'm out 2-4 weeks. tendon damage never is the same in the hand.

Getting a better driller helps. But that is not enough. NO matter how good( my driller is great) a driller, they all don't know everything. seek out a few good drillers and get your hand fitted by each. My driller wouldn't do a CLT. I found another good driller that did.

I have not suffered an injury since I relaxed my span and went with a clt  fitting.( 8 months and no injury.) Don't take the hand injury lightly and try to find a fitting and proper release to prevent pain. It makes it a whole lot more fun and easier to concentrate with out that distraction. now if my knees would stop hurting.....

Well, congratulations go out to Tiffany Stanbrough for a fine performance in the finals!  Even after back to back open frames, she gathered it back up and made the clutch strikes when she needed 'em.  It appeared that the left lane was giving most all of the competitors fits, but Tiffany found a way to string some strikes when the heat was on.

It will be interesting to see if her momentum from this week will carry over to Rockford, Illinois at Cherry Bowl next week.

I know I have posted this before, but the injury was not as a result of anything related to the drilling.  I even had the span checked again after the injury and before I hit the road.  After the fracture in February, I saw not one but two orthopedists, one of whom is a relatively prominent hand specialist, and the diagnosis being made after both x-rays and an MRI.  After the original consults, there was a prolonged period of time with a physical therapist that included quite a bit of ultrasound (which helped tremendously with freeing up the hand on the days  I had league).

My injury was not a case of something going pop and me just not doing anything about it...I haven't seen all of the bills yet, but I believe the total before insurance kicks in its share is somewhere around $4-5K.

To get back to 10ITP's original post, congrats to Tif on conquering what was a challenging week.  Carry was at a premium during the entire event, not just the show today.
