Congrats to Carolyn Dorin-Ballard leading the first round of the Greater Cincinnati Open.  And good heavens!  She averaged 239+!!!  In fact the top 20 bowlers were averaging over 219.  Would love to know what shot they are using.

#2 is Cindy Coburn-Carroll
#3 is Rachel Perez
#4 is Cara Honeychurch
#5 is Michelle Feldman

Maybe they decided to give the Ladies a break after the Rockford condition.  Don't want they to be that frustrated two weeks in a row.  Could get ugly!

Speaking of the ugly lane conditions at Rockford, I caught on the telecast where they mentioned that the lanes were treated the entire 60 feet with Guardian finish.  My experiences with Guardian are limited to one house (Reno Hilton Lanes), but from what I've heard from others out there, Guardian can prove to be a tough shot condition after the surface has been installed for over 6 months.  Maybe there is a connection between the Guardian overlay at Rockford and the poor scoring conditions there.....I also recall them mentioning on the telecast that Cherry Bowl has a history of being a low scoring house.

Chery Bowl is tough... the high school state tournament is usually held there.  The Rockford girls do very well, which figures.

10intp,

Just be glad you do not have to bowl on a full length Guardian overlay; it is THE abomination of the bowling world. I think it's sole positive is that it's cheap to buy and install; owners use it as an interim measure on their way towards saving for full synthetics (I believe).

I hear that like a good vinyl flooring in your home, unless the underlayment is in perfect and pristine condition, Guardian's effects on bowling are even worse.

It is soft so the heads seem like they wear right away, making the oil appear to disappear. After about a game of 4 or 5 person league, you get serious carrydown. IF you are VERY lucky, you can just move further inside with each 2 - 3 frames; If you are unlucky, you start seeing tons of carrydown AND you can't move inside becauss the inside shot hasn't opened up yet. You need pearls to clear the heads, yet you need strong backend balls to handle carrydown. Lefties often prevail because their side wears at a much slower rate. If you have 4 lefties on a pair, you will hear some new expletives.

All in all, I bowled on it for 2 years, and they were the least fun I've had in bowling for a long time.

 10 Cheryl Daniels-West Bloomfield, MI 3592 1873 0 0 5465
 227.70 3- 5- 0 5555 +755

These top ten are breaking away from the field quite a bit, so it could lead to some speculation where your top five will come in at.  As you can see, the averages are up pretty good this week.

Several times during the telecast Cathy said that the bowlers had to get their balls more to the outside and they were 'guaranteed' to come roaring back to the pocket.  That the farther right they went, the more they would hook because of the dry out there.  She said this kind of thing on a few occasions.  Maybe I just don't fully understand what is going on, but these comments and the high (235+) averages for the week make me wonder if it was almost a house shot out there.  Many of us have speculated on what kind of scores the pros would do if they had a house shot to play on.  Maybe we just found out.

That being said, house shot or sport shot or US Open-type hell, the good bowlers are still good.

Well, still, they weren't doing all that hot for having the reaction out there.  I saw a couple times that Cheryl got it outside, and it did ROAR back.  That's when you move deeper and bounce it off the dry.  The ball looked like it came up from anywhere as long as you got it outside, but there was oil in the middle.  I bowl on a shot like that, kick it outside and you'll do great.  Course, my carry is like theirs too, but then you just have to live off mixers.
