Giving up on the Slant HD (update)
« on: January 16, 2013, 11:16:35 AM »
Well giving up on the HD for now. It's too much of cracker and just can't find a surface that matches up for more than a game.

The bridge cracked after about 10-12 games and had a half moon hairline crack around the mid finger. I filled the bridge crack and its been okay since, but crack after crack appears around the fingers after everytime I have used it which hasn't been much.

Then last night a chunk fell out of the ring finger, So I bagged it for the duration.

I see part of the problem the coverstock is "THIN" under a 1/4" at the fingers.

So now I'm trying to decide if I want to fix it or not.

Disappointed I liked how the ball rolled, But all I've done is adjust the cover fishing for a good match and watch it crack as it sets in the bag for 75% of the time.

For now I'll have to stick with my Roto Grips. They hold up better at least for me.

I see Radical is hooking up with Mo, a suggestion for you guys "Make the covers thicker so they can hold up for a while"

That bridge doesn't look wide enough...

Not only is the bridge narrow, the warranty was likely void with the pin that close to the ring finger hole.

Not only is the bridge narrow, the warranty was likely void with the pin that close to the ring finger hole.

I checked the bridge with calipers its right at a 1/4" it might look narrow at the top do to bevel on the holes.

As for the pin being close to the holes , that didn't cause all the cracks around the holes.
Shoot The first cracks the appeared were over by the middle finger, no where near the pin.

As for the warranty I wasn't even worried about it, I wasn't going to make a warranty claim in the first place.

I'm not saying the Radical balls are bad, just I think the cover stock on this one is too thin.

That's weird. I don't use grips, and use only 900 and AMF. Never had a problem. Only balls that have cracked on me have been ones that I have plugged the fingers and redrilled it right back into place. And believe me, I've drilled plenty of them.

Just a FYI there were grips in my ball, I pulled them out figuring on fixing it.

Ive been making sure to glue my inserts to the filler, and havent had any cracking since. Ive had quite a few crack from alot of manufacturers, drilled by different people. The glue was the only thing I could think of.

Yeah, I don't use inserts. Also don't bevel the fingers, but still haven't had a problem.

Sorry to hear, Aloajr. I can't wait to punch up my HD! :)

These inserts were glued into the filler (with that 1/4" thick cover you couldn't help but glue them into the filler.)

Now my Roto Grip nomads have a real thick cover and I've had them for quite a while and no cracking.

If you want to get rid of, send me pics and I'll look at it and possibly buy from you.

Looks like the driller drilled the holes too fast or has dull bits or both.  It shouldn't look like bedrock going down into the holes.  It should always be smooth.  You almost have to go slow, 1/4" deep at a time, raise up, vacuum, repeat until it reaches the desired depth.  I've drilled thousands and thousands of balls and only remember less than 10 that had the cracks like your picture.  Does your driller have alot of balls that come out of his shop that crack or is this like a 1 shot deal?

Well putting the HD back in the rotation, Took it it down and got it fixed. Still one hairline crack over by the pin, But I think it will be okay. Also increased the bridge to 5/16" and of course beveled the holes.

The plug matches the ball better than it looks in this (I Adjusted the contrast and lighting to make it stand out more) It's smooth and is level with the rest of the ball.

Some micro pits appeared after I put a little polish on it, but I see the rest of the ball has them around some. But I think they'll disappear after a couple of sandings, It was Vise Rapid Cure Ball Plug.

Well bowled 3 games tonight with the repaired Slant HD

The repaired area held up well, but there's a new half moon hairline crack already above the middle finger in coverstock.

I wouldn't recommend this ball, if you have a high track. That 3/16"-1/4" thick cover is too thin to take the pounding around the holes.

The ball filler material needed to be alittle more solid also.

The same thing happened to my Slant HD.  Zoom in and look at the fingers.  Cracks all around both of them.

Yep that's it and it won't stop. Had a couple of guy's interested in radical till they saw this happening.

Hope Mo and Brunswick will help them step up on the process.
