Reax 2 Ball Spinner Question
« on: August 17, 2015, 06:55:48 PM »
One year ago I purchased the Reax V. 2, my first new ball in about 12 years.  The pro who drilled it said that he would run it through the spinner for me for no charge, if needed.

To me this sounded strange, because I have had quite a few balls in the past, and was never told that before.

But after reading a bit on balls of the last few years, it is common to "change the surface" of the ball quite often.

So I am going in to get a new ball drilled and I guess I should also have them do this at the same time.

My question is, what do I tell them?  Should I request them to get it back to the original "out of box" condition?  The very first series I had, without even practicing with it, was 698.  Which was my highest all season, except for a 702 the next to last week(2 different leagues).

So I think I liked it the way it was originally.  This is complicated by the fact that he put in one wrong-sized grip.  I bowled so well the first couple weeks with it, I never took it back in, until my finger got so sore it affected my bowling.  It took me half the season after that to get back to normal.  At that point I don't know if I forgot how I bowled so well with it the first few weeks, or if the ball's surface had already changed enough to affect its performance.

This kind of info seems to be common knowledge for seasoned bowlers these days, but it is all new to me!

Go talk with your proshop operator and he will get you taken care. Surface is a huge factor in bowling ball reaction. Many times the ball will lose reaction over a period of games gradually and the bowler never notices.

Have it cleaned and resurfaced and see what kind of difference you notice.

I was under the impression that entire resurfacing was different than whatever it is that they do with the ball spinner?  I had a Chaos resurfaced after several years use, which is the only time I have ever had anything done, other than running one ball through the Lustre King.

Sorry, I am oblivious to this process.   To me, anytime they run the ball through the spinner that would be resurfacing.  But I thought I had heard that a total resurface was different.

See your local proshop operator. The options are many,  and the person seeing this in person is the one doing the work.

A true/total Resurfacing is where you return a ball to a like new state, removing all nicks, gouges, scratches etc. This can remove a lot of material depending on what condition a ball is in to begin with.

A refinishing or surface adjustment is basically where your only refreshing the surface texture or making some adjustment to the surface texture Without removing all surface blemishes.

Resurfacing can be done with a spinner, it's not limited to just refinishing.

Now the Lustre king is okay for polishing a plastic ball and maybe Urethanes, as for Resin balls. It's like dropping a ball in a bucket and taking a dump on it.

It plugs up the pores and can kill a ball, especially if they have the wrong compound block in it. (which I saw happen , they had to sand the stuff off to get the balls to work again.)

note: Lustre king type machines are not ball cleaners, so clean the ball first or it just grinds the dirt and grime into the ball. plus it gets the buffing wheel dirty and gets on the next ball.

And if your waiting years to do anything to a balls surface, your waiting too long!!

I only used the Lustre King to polish a ball as recommended by the guy who sold it to me, to make it go a little longer down the lane, but that was years ago.

Thanks for clearing up the difference between resurfacing and surface adjustment, that is what I didn't understand.

For what it's worth, my reax v2 was a sleeper until I hit it with 2000 on a spinner. Then it really came to life. It was good before, after it was great. Surface is the thing that you can adjust. Even if you dont have a spinner, you can tweak the surface with different grits until you find what works for you. It can be fustrating, but it will be satisfying when you find what works for you.

I considered getting one, but I am so inept mechanically, I am afraid I would not be able to figure it out or, worse, I would mess up the ball.

A lot of owners of spinners had no experience other than watching someone else when they started.  I believe there are videos out that show several methods so you can learn from that and by experimenting on an older ball.  You can also Search this site for previous posts about using a spinner.  Plus, you can always ask questions on sites like this one.

A guy on my team has one and I am going to go watch him next week.  He says he is not sure he knows what he is doing either though.
