Warranty or my loss?
« on: February 01, 2014, 10:22:22 AM »
I've bowled for 50 years and never had a cover crack. I know that's hard to believe, but it's true. I try to treat my equipment well and keep it from extremes...

So, please forgive my newbie question, but....

There I was, carrying my new (3 games) Radical Torrid Affair into the house from the garage. I dropped it (about 3-4 ft) onto the garage floor. Caught it on the bounce, not bad for an old man... :) No big deal, not the first ball I've dropped.
I got into the house and just for the heck of it checked the ball. I'll be damned, first cracked cover in my life...
If it's my bad, then my loss. No worries... If it's unusual and a warranty claim, then I'll see what happens.
But is it really that fragile?
Thanks in advance for the feedback. New experience for me.

I can tell you this.....it never hurts to try.  Sometimes all it can take is a call and you'd be surprised what a company that wants to keep their customers happy may do for you...

I'd send a message to Newguy to see what he says.  Wouldn't hurt to ask.  It does not appear to be a manufacturers defect though based on what you said happened.  Anything can happen when a ball is dropped from that height.  Accidents happen and  unfortunately it happened to you.   :(

Lefty,

99.99% bowling balls will not crack when you drop them. Heck, I've tried to crack a couple of older ball open to look at the core when I was through with them and they were no longer usable. I've hit them with a 5 lb. sledge hammer and they barely got scratched. Was yours left in a cold garage overnight or similar temperature extreme that might have made it brittle? (I doubt it but I have to ask.)

I'd take it back to where I got it, if it's at all convenient. Most warranties should go through the distributor. Wouldn't hurt to send Radical an email, though.

Try your shop guy first, he may be able to go through his dist. If not that call the manufacturer, they will most likely want pictures but I have had very good luck with most all brands even when it was questionable why the ball cracked. It's a least worth a phone call or two.

Something just does not seem right about a bowling ball, which is made to be hurled down a lane to hit objects with force, cracking when it hits the floor.

I appreciate the replies. Not only was this my first Radical ball, it was also my first time drilling at Buddies (and they did a good job...), so going to the Pro Shop might be harder...
I agree it seems odd, although anything can happen and I fully understand that it was my bad to drop it. On the other hand, I've done it before. I almost didn't even check, but glad I did. Will tickle this thread when I have a final answer....

I forgot one thing... Jeff, I definitely didn't leave it in the cold. I'm in Phoenix, and never leave the ball in the car overnight or during the day at work. It sits in my office. That's just the way my Dad taught me and I've never broken stride.

Contact Buddies, attach a copy of your purchase receipt, send a pic of the crack and serial number.  Brunswick is very good about warranty issues.

Well, you certainly have extremes of temperature. Still not enough for a ball to crack like that, Check out the usual warranty options.

To his credit, Chris responded on a Saturday and said he'd try to help. We'll see what the week brings. I asked a few people at practice today as well and general consensus is that it shouldn't have cracked. No one was willing to believe I've been bowling this long without a crack, but it's true.

Actually that is not true, it is easy to make a statement that 99.99% of the times it will not crack when no data supports the statement. If a ball is dropped and hits a finger hole it will crack more times than not. We do drop texting on drilled and undrilled balls so we know what to expect. We expect a drilled ball dropped on a cement slab to crack depending on where it impacts the ball especially if it has finger grips or a thumb slug. We certainly honor mfg defects.
Let me know how you make out with Buddies.
