Having had success with many versions of the previous Cell releases, I was excited to try a new pearl version.

I have so much equipment that is just smooth and even, I was thinking about trying to lay it out for something like a skid/flip. I ended up with something that has a strong, even backend, but nothing super sharp.

Iâ€™ve used the Skid on a couple of different house shots and found success on both. As long as there is some volume in the fronts, I get a very consistent roll. The only issue I have encountered was on a pair that seemed to have a serious amount of volume with limited backend. The Skid tried to roll and finish, but the over/under was pretty terrible. I had to put it away.

I am going to be putting more games on this one and try to get in some games on some sport patterns to get a better idea of how it rolls without bounce on the outside or a massive wall inside.

The overall motion I have seen is very smooth with a distinct move when it encounters friction. It likes to go, but with my current roll, it wasnâ€™t sharp. It was predictable and controllable.

Thus far, I really like what Iâ€™m seeing. I need to get more games to determine how it handles other patterns.

If you were a fan of any of the original Cell series, this one should be in your bag.

If youâ€™re like myself, any time Roto Grip releases a ball in the Cell line you know you have to have one. I've had a lot of success with the Hyper Cell on a variety of conditions. The Skid, as expected, offered the perfect step down when the Hyper Cell becomes a bit early or you need something a bit quicker off the spot.

With the OOB surface this ball floats through the front of the lane with ease and makes a very solid move off the spot without being too jumpy. If youâ€™re looking for a strong move on the back while being clean through the front this could be the answer. I love the original Hyper Cell but found that I could not really use it effectively on a typical house shot due to the strong cover. This fixes that issue as I am able to use this with no issues and I am able to move left and watch this ball recover with no issues.

Lay Out: 4.5" from PAP at 60* PAP angle and 40* VAL angle. Dual angle measurement would be 60/4.5/40. No weight hole as I wanted to throw it first and then make tweaks if needed.

Surface: Box which is 1500 Reacta-Shine. I also tried it at 3000 sa-air abralon by hand.

Purpose: I wanted a stronger pearl ball to throw either on longer patterns or to be able to move into the puddle for leagues.

Observations: The Hyper Cell Skid is the ball Roto heads have been craving since the original Cell Pearl. I threw it some side by side with the Optimus, Lucid, and Unhinged. The Optimus was longer with some of the same shape. On longer patterns with the Skid at 3000 there is enough separation to "ball down" from the Skid to the Optimus. Out of box, they are very close with the Skid being just a little more flippy on the back. The Lucid is one that i have always kept at the box finish of 4000. The Lucid has been a life saver for me on longer/flatter patterns as the back end reaction is very predictable. The Skid is right there with it and with 3000 has more grab early. The Skid has more downlane shape and may cause me to have to open up my angles more with it than the Lucid. Compared to the Unhinged, there can be a little bit of a gap especially if your at a place that gets wet/dry very quickly. If you surface the Skid, then the gap gets wider and might need something in between unless you can change shapes or skid the heads with your ball speed and/or release. Putting an Outcry in between these covers any gap and makes a pretty good 1-2-3 punch.

Conclusions: The Hyper Cell Skid is definitely a great piece and compliment to ball down with the original Hyper Cell or Sinister. It is also a good piece to fill the gap between your stronger solids and the lower powered Outcry to Unhinged to UpRoar/Wrecker. Try one out, you won't be disappointed.

The Roto Grip Hyper Cell Skid has the pin next to the ring finger with the cg out and PSA under the thumb with a weight hole down to help it pick up in the mid lane with the surface at factory finish which is 1500 polish. Having the nucleus weight block that has been successful in the original cell and other cell balls it was a no brainer this one would be right up there with the other great cells. For myself game 1 out the box I shot 279 during a tournament so I had an idea that the Hyper Cell Skid would be a soon to be favorite. Hence the name Hyper Cell SKID is for sure has some skid to it but with A LOT of strong back end motion with the pearl cover stock but controllable which makes sense with the famous weight block. Comparing it to the Hyper Cell solid the solid version would be my first ball on heavy oil or a longer sport pattern then once the lanes break down then I can go to the Hyper Cell Skid and stay in the same area and get it down lane and have almost a flip look down lane.

Normally on a fresh house shot I donâ€™t like to use strong pearl balls because they can be too much ball reaction but with the Hyper Cell Skid I figured to give it a try and see what it would do and surprised me on how well it handled a drier condition for what it is meant for. Going back to the 279 game that is how I shot it; it was on house shot game 1 fresh and I was able to use it the rest of the 4 game block since we moved lanes. During league it is also a house shot and I went back to back weeks with 700s one with a 788 and 746. On kegel route 66 which at the time was the pattern we were on in sport league; I was shocked on how well I able to get some movement on that pattern with it being long and a good amount of oil. I would play really straight and direct around 9 or 10 board and let the ballâ€™s back end motion get it to the pocket and not having to force it. I have never had a strong pearl on a longer pattern be able to do that. If you are looking for a strong pearl with great back end almost like â€œskid flipâ€ then the Hyper Cell Skid is the one for you.

COMMENTS

Likes: If you were to look up the term "long and strong" in the bowlers dictionary, there would be the factory write up/picture of the Hyper Cell Skid! The ball simply "wow's" me every time I throw it. The most challenging thing that I face with this ball is keeping it IN my bag and not in my hand nonstop. It absolutely eats up house shots and most patterns other than the slickest or driest. The Nucleus core is just as great as it always has been and the new 73MH Pearl coverstock is so responsive and strong off of the dry. The layout I chose was 5"x3"x4" buffer. Even with that smooth of a buffer, the ball is still so quick in transition. With a little surface on the ball, the cover can handle some higher volume patterns with appropriate speed. It offers a "flippier" shape than the Hyper Cell and saves all of the energy for the back end. The ball hits like a truck and sprays pins everywhere. Bottom line, the Hyper Cell Skid is a strong, flippy, savage, asymmetric pearl that belongs not in your bag...but in your hand! #OwnIt
