RS-1
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Have you ever wanted to harness the power of a shooting star?

Roto Grip® has done it with the introduction of the RS-1tm. This new mid-price ball delivers unmatched performance in its class.

The modified Rotary IIItm core has been encapsulated to lower the RG as well as raising the differential. This translates into better read in the body of the lane along with stellar energy retention down the lane.

The Sure Griptm pearl reactive shell on the Roto Star provides modest length and volatile backend reaction on those medium patterns.

Memo Rosales from Bowlers Image in El Monte laid out this gem
4 1/2 " from my Pap under ringer finger with imaginary MB at 55 degrees
I bring this with me everywhere . I really like this ball when I can use it.
I think ball is more forgiving the silver streak pearl by far! I feel this is the best pearl on the market period

I just wanted to chime in about this bad boy.  I layed my RS-1 with a fairly safe label weight drill.  About a 3 1/2 inch pin tucked neatly next to the ring finger.  I am happy to report I have shot my first 300 since making the switch to Roto equipment.  This ball absolutely owns medium conditions for me.  And to my surprise it is also great when lanes are starting to transition.  The RS-1 allows me to move in when my weaker equipment is starting to give out and still has the legs to cut through the carry down.  Don't miss out on constant performer.  Thanks again Roto Grip!!!

All I can say is "Holy Backend Batman!"  I just bought this ball to try out another company since I'm a die hard Storm thrower.  Good thing Roto is made by Storm.  Got a 15# with a 3 3/4" pin and 3 oz top weight.  I needed to find something that gave me the flip that my Ace originally had but now is starting to die.  Drilled this one up  5 x 3 (Axis is 5 1/2" over and 3/8" up, RH) Ball came off the press with over an ounce of finger and 2 ounces side.  So I drilled the fingers deeper to fix that problem and drilled the thumb deep to take that to zero.  Drilled a 7/8" weight hole an inch in from my axis right next to Roto Star logo and left it with 1 ounce side.  Only threw about a game on it but I like it so far.  On a fresh lane, 38' Top Hat shot at my house, if I swung it to the dry, look out 8 pin.  This ball hits like a tank and slaps that 10 pin out nice.  If I pulled it a little, it would hold an still carry.  Thats what I need this early in the season with the new pins in our house not carrying very well right now.  I've got an RS-X coming with similar specs that I am going to drill 4 x 4 to use as a heavy oil ball.  I got a friend getting the new Epic that I have to drill for him and I will post a review on that one soon.  I think I'm going to like this ball.

I have two of these, one is drilled with pin about 2" above the inside of the middle finger with cg under the outside of the ring finger (1), and the other is drilled with pin above middle finger and cg about 5:30 in reference to the pin(2). Both balls revved up rather quickly for a pearl but never wanted to over react. Number 1 was too strong for some patterns but once I got some carry down the ball kept me in play. Number 2 is a very smooth roller for when I find myself with very little head oil or extremely wet dry conditions. Absolutely love the ball my arsenal is not complete without it.

Check profile for bowler diagnostics:

Pin 4 1/2 inches from PAP (2 inch pin), under ring, small low hole on VAL, went pin down to eliminate any possible (squirt) and tame backend. Needless to say this thing still rips on the back.

Surface: Left as is

Test Centers:

House #2- Brunswick Pro-Anvilane, medium heavy blend, track opens up and carries down slighty.

House #3- HPL's (heads only), wood backends, 34 ft pattern buffed to 37. Track blows up quick forcing players deep early

House #5- HPL's, again not sure of pattern, as mechanic is a caveman lacking people skills. They use an old pad machine and this place flat out hooks, everywhere and from every angle.

House #6- Very old wood, not sure of pattern, not even sure if they employ a lane man or even have a lane machine. Place flat out hooks, early and often.

Was looking for something a tad longer than my One and Overtime, but more strength/recovery than my Ultra Sonic. After mulling it over it came down to the RS-1. Fills a niche right between the Overtime and the Ultra Sonic very well.

Likes-
-Midlane read, most pearls tend to keep going past this point of the lane, not the RS-1
-Recovery/Backend, ball flips back violently from most anywhere, regardless of where you are playing the lane, most backend in my bag, more pronounced flip than my One
-Hit- sends messengers all over the place, ball just shreds racks, as far as pure power, strongest in my bag
-Core Strength, can handle heavier volumes of oil and some carrydown.

Dislikes-
-Condition specific, probably best suited for THS/walls. Too erractic on fresh, tougher patterns.
-Transition, this isnt necessarily a dislike but the RS-1 lets you know when its time move your feet, 3-6-10's, 6-10's, big 4's a plenty if you dont keep an eye on the way the pins are falling or the way the ball is rolling
-Hit, again, sometimes its like the gift and curse all in one. Major league ringing 10's. Also I kind of get use to messengers going every which way I expect messengers to clear the deck almost everytime.

Conclusion:
Good strong pearl to chase the pattern in or a ball where you need to get it to the "proverbial" spot and have it bend off of it. You need head oil somewhere in the front part of the lane. If I can use this ball comfortably, im putting up telephone numbers. Otherwise I better get my spare ball because if early tests are anything 9/ will be pretty common with this ball due to its flip of the breakpoint. Great ball for strokers and tweeners, may be too early and have too much power in the back for crankers. All in all it fits where I wanted it to. Good ball but by no means is it a Silver Streak Pearl. But thats another discussion for another day.

I just drilled up an RS-1 after many months of doing research on this ball. my first impressions are wow!

I got one with a 3" pin. ball is drilled with the pin over the ring finger and the mass bias in the strong position.

I threw it on a fresh house shot and boy was i suprise. this ball is crazy! it goes through the heads so clean and then as soon as it gets to the backends it makes a U-turn for the pocket. it makes its turn and just keeps on going. I realized this when I left the 4-9 in the pocket.

I beilieve that this is a ball that should be in anyones arsenal. thumbs up to roto grip!

This is an oldie but a goodie. This is my 2nd rs-1 to date, this one is used, pin over RF with the cg down and slightly to the right of the midline. There is a balance hole 3in rt of midline approximately on the val. I loved this ball as a kid and regret giving it up for anything. I bowl a team usa experience league and have used it a couple times with great success. I helped my team win the quarter on the altanta pattern and the ball is phenomenal. Hits as hard as i remember, and it rolls like a champ. Very even and constant with great continuation thru the pins. This ball might be 7yrs old, but it does not act like it. I used it this week on the sydney pattern with decent success for about a game and a half before i had to move left. Im looking forward to what next week may bring. I will also be getting an rs-p to handle a bit more oil but not as much as my jigsaw corner. Looking forward to rocking the old school arsenal!!! Also looking forward to possibly redrilling my old rush
