Shooting Star
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Ball NPS Score: 100.00
- Coverstock: Ultimate Vision Solid Reactive
- Weight Block:Neutron Core (14-16)
- Ball  Color: 2-Tone Purple All colors do vary somewhat from  the picture shown.
- Ball Finish: 2000-grit  Abralon
- Track Flare Potential: 4-5 inches (Med) on  a scale of 1-10 Low-High
- Recommended Lane  Conditions: Medium-Heavy Oil
- A few tiny pit holes in the cover  stock of the ball are normal
- Description: With the  phenomenal success of the original Rising Star, the Shooting Star must utilize  the new Neutron core as the power source. It's just that good!
The Neutron  core's medium RG- medium differential shape is based on the concept started with  the original Photon core. But with the Neutron core, you'll find an even lower  radius of gyration (RG) and higher differential in the heavier weights which  hooks up heavy on the backend.
To increase the midlane roll and bring an  earlier break point, we looked at a few different options. Testing the Ultimate  Vision coverstock in a solid version produced the desired motion. Prepped with  2000-grit Abralon, the Shooting Star created a break point that was two feet  earlier and more rounded, or smoother. Controlling the pocket is often the key  to higher scores. Shoot for higher scores with the new Shooting Star.

Ball specs – 15 lbs 1 oz, 2.97 top weight, and 3.5-inch pin.

The Shooting Star was drilled with a 4.5-inch pin, 50-degree drill angle and a 70-degree VAL angle. This layout did require an extra hole and was placed in the P2 position. Using Storm drilling terminology the layout is 4.5 by 3 with a 4 1/8 inch pin buffer. The cover stock was left OOB.

I was really surprised by how much friction the OOB cover created. The Shooting Star started up much sooner that I thought it would but did not roll out. The amount of overall hook was a little less than the Outlaw. Hit and carry were very good. Track flare was in the four inch range, tight but not over lapping. I will probably be changing the cover with Storm’s Step 2 finish.

An OOB Shooting Star will handle heavy-medium to light-heavy patterns with ease. There is a lot of hook potential in this entry level piece.

Likes: Strong roll and pin hit.

Using the ball on a fresh house condition with medium to heavy oil volume, I was able to play the outside line to the pocket that this layout provides. The Shooting Star lived up to the design intent of increasing midlane roll with an earlier breakpoint. Ball motion through the pins was continuous and strong.

On a house condition after the youth league, I was able to still play outside off the wet dry by moving my feet left and playing a 10 to 5 line. The Shooting Star came off the dry and produced a strong arc to the pocket. This gave a good pin mix with little deflection off the pins.

Likes: My wife tried this on Demo Day.  She is a stroker that is trying to learn how to hook the ball.  Her usual efforts are either ball goes too long and doesn't hook soon enough, or starts turning up too soon and dies in the pocket leaving 5-7, 5-10 or similar leaves.

She rolled the Shooting Star and was quite impressed with it.  OOTB with ??? number of games on it.  The ball read the mid-lane quick enough to start on a good line to the pocket, and still had plenty of punch to carry the 5 pin and it's friends.  She is anxiously waiting on her Shooting Star to come in at the end of the month.

LANE CONDITION

Layout: 50 x 4 x 40 pin up

Length: 44FT heavy oil house pattern and a 41FT mid-heavy oil house pattern

44FT pattern on HPL and the 41FT on older SPL

Likes: Overall length for a solid reactive ball, very controlable even with a stronger angle of drilling.

I found that this ball with a 4000ab surface is much more to my liking. I had it at box condition and it was a tad early and a tad stronger then what I was expecting. Was able to move deeper inside and got away from the track area on both lane conditions and surfaces... i was looking for something stronger overall then a Riot, but weaker then a Theory... Well I found it.... Also,,, check out my other review on this ball... I drilled a 70 x 4 x 65 pin under

Likes: Love the roll it produces, able to play deep inside without any over/under.

Layout: 70 x 4 x 65 with pin under @ 2000ab.

I love the overall reaction this this layout of the ball, used a heavier used 2000ab pad to change the cover valves just a tad to help produce what it would roll like after 15-20 games. I'm able to get left and fade it off of the friction towards the gutter on the 42FT pattern and played just inside of the track area on the 41FT pattern, playing outside on the 41FT tended to create a little "early" hook and tended to take on a slight over/under on lanes that were used extemely hard on the left side. Did want something to be weeker overall then the 50 x 4 x 40 that I drilled and this work quite well. A tad stronger overall then my Riots I currently used.

LANE CONDITION

Length:41'

Volume:Medium

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc):THS

COMMENTS

Likes:Continuous finish, above average friction response. Reacts well to polishing and/or sanding. I drilled my shooting star 5x5 and it is very clean through the heads and strong on the back end. Great for medium to heavy oil conditions with a smooth predictable reaction.

Dislikes: As with all hookers, the shooting star becomes less effective when the heads dry up and burns up on drier or shorter conditions. However, a little Reacta shine or storm 2 will resolve this

Roto Grip you have done it again! The Shooting Star is unbelievable! What a great addition to the rising star. The solid is out of this world and will blow your mind as you see the reaction of this ball.I drilled mine with no hole and the pin is above my ring and cg is kicked out just a little. Wow does it ever pop towards the pocket hard. If you're looking for something stronger to add to your bag this is it! I can't wait to throw this one some more. This addition to the Roto Grip line will give you the edge you need to beat your compitition!

Accomplishment: Who makes better $100 plus balls than Roto Grip.. The Shooting Star keeps the line going. My 3 inch pin is below the fingers with the CG out . As a LH Senior Stroker & on league conditions I can go 12-14 out to 5-8 with a very smooth arc to the pocket. Staying behind the ball a little more gets the ball a little further down the lane before the break & takes away a lot of the 7 pins for me. The Solid Reactive cover makes the Star react like a high-end ball. The Folks like the color too.....Larry Hoffman, RG Adisory Staff

 I really love the bowling ball its 15lb pin up with a 5X4X 2 1/2  my pap is 6 1/8---- > 1 1/2 up

375 rev rate.

I really love the ball a lot of hook for the price point. About 5-6 boards weaker than my new 716c with out of box finish and about 8 boards weaker when i broke the shine on my 716c. Fits into my bag perfectly. It does not get too flippy off the spot when the lanes break down.

Hello all and thanks for reading   YouTube video for this review is here :

Well now here we are yet again with another Roto Grip success story.  This is a phenomenal ball at an incredible pricepoint.  If you are looking for a ball that hooks and handles a fairly high volume of oil then you have come to the right place. This ball for me is great on Shark and Scorpion when the value of a good cover with a slightly less strength of core of at a premium.  This ball is great for transitions on heavy oil and will blend out the toughest of carry down.  The obvious choice for review against the Shooting Star is the Rising Star.  As you can see the Rising star gets down the lane much easier and still maintains a great downlane motion just not as much as the Shooting Star.  I drilled up with a slightly weaker drilling so I can use it on more than just some of the longer patterns.  My favorite layout would definately be too much with the box surface with the pin being down.   This ball has gotten a permanent spot in the bag for Synthetic lanes and longer patterns.  Great Job guys.  Roto Grip whats next....... oh yeah....... stay tuned.

Roto Grip Shooting Star
Pin Under Bridge, CG swung positive, medium width/depth hole down.

I have a Rising Star drilled identically that I wanted to try to compliment with something that
blanded the spot just a little better and maybe hook a touch more and this piece with the same
layout did so beautifully. It provides relatively good reaction strength considering the price
point along with controllable ball motion, good continuation and great hit (always a concern with
"weaker" weight blocks). I love this ball. It also is a good looking ball as well, nice appeal on
the shelf and visually appealing as it rolls down the lane. Another EXCELLENT release from Roto Grip.

We tested this ball in the OOB 2000 abralon condition in the House shot as well as the sport shot.  We also tested a surface change to 4000 abarlon with some polish.

This ball is a relatively strong piece at a very good price point.  Roto Grip continues to offer very good bang for the buck.  While I think this ball is slightly less versatile than the Rising Star due to the strength of solid cover, it is a nice step up from it.  On the house shot, it is actually quite strong.  In OOB, it really gets into a roll a bit early, losing some of its hitting power.  This will be especially true for bowlers with slower ball speed or rev dominant bowlers.  It will be much more at home in a heavier house shot.  When tested on the house shot at 4000 abralon with polish, the ball worked much better.  It was still pretty strong, but an extra foot of length helped.  This ball generates lots of entry angle.
On the sport shot is where this ball really shines.  It offered a consistent and strong reaction on a pretty difficult pattern.  This ball can be an excellent go to ball on the more difficult patterns where you need a consistent and predictable ball reaction, but on the stronger side.

Given my higher ball speed and rev rate, i am able to keep the factory 2000 finish on the Shooting Star, and easily get it through the heads without much worry of it squirting past the break point.  Moving deeper reguires a bit more tilt and possibly slower speed depending on the lane surface, but i've had success on all parts of the lane with this ball.  Had 300 twice in the same week with my shooting star, one on older wood surface playing 4th arrow, and one on new synthetic surfact playing between first and second arrow.  for an "entry level ball" this one truly delivers.
