Description: The Roto Grip Defiant sports a Paragon Core (14-16) covered in the MicroBite Solid Reactive Coverstock. This combination, finshed with a 1500 grit Abralon sanding, creates a motion that reacts mid-lane, and has a continuous action, hooking towards the backend. This ball was made to react well in heavy oil conditions.

LANE CONDITION

Length:Various

Volume:Various

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc):Various

COMMENTSThe Totally Defiant is the pearl version in the HP4 Line for Roto Grip. When compared to the Defiant Soul which is also in the HP4 line the Totally Defiant goes longer and has more backend motion. The reason behind this is in their coverstocks. The Defiant Soul has a Hybrid coverstock whereas the Totally Defiant has a pearl coverstock. The pearl coverstock enables the Totally Defiant to conserve more energy through the front and mid lane which lends to more backend motion. The Paragon weight block allows the Totally Defiant to still be strong and have a continuous motion.  That means that the Totally Defiant combines the best of both world’s length and consistency.

The layout that I used for the Totally Defiant is 50 X 4 X 45 that is for the Dual Angle drillers or basically Pin above and slightly to right of the right finger and the extra hole is on the midline at 1 inch pass my PAP. My PAP is 5 5/8 over and ¾ up and I am right handed. My Rev rate is around 300 and my ball speed is around 15 mph.

I used the Totally Defiant on several different patterns and found out that the Totally Defiant is a very versatile bowling ball. When I used it on a Typical House Pattern, I had some issues early because of the over/under. That is typical for me and pearlized coverstocks. However, when the pattern started to carry down or become less wet/dry this bowling ball is awesome. The Totally Defiant is a strong ball that’s provides good length. I used the Totally Defiant on several Sport Patterns and found more success on the medium volume and medium lengths (37ft – 41ft). I compared the Totally Defiant against the Defiant Soul on an AMF version of the Viper Pattern (37ft). The Defiant Soul wanted to start up sooner than the Totally Defiant. The Totally Defiant had more backend reaction than the Defiant Soul. The Totally Defiant over reacted when I first started whereas the Defiant Soul was controllable and never gave away the pocket. When the pattern started to breakdown and I had to move left the Totally Defiant was perfect. The length and backend motion became an asset instead of a liability. When I was using the Defiant Soul I was 5 boards farther right with my feet but my breakpoint was left and sooner than the Totally Defiant. The reason for this is the backend reaction of the Totally Defiant!

I normally do not like asymmetrical bowling balls, the Totally Defiant changed my mind!

First off I would like to say that in the past I have had mixed results with asymmetrical cores in bowling balls. Symmetrical cores are usually the first balls out of my bag in league/tournaments, but the Totally Defiant definitely proves me wrong. It is not your typical rolling asymmetrical core ball, it is like a pearl symmetrical ball on steroids. The backend is fantastic, and weak 7 pins are a thing of the past.
I used this ball in the UBA classic tournament Labor Day Tourney where the conditions are typically pretty tight, but the totally defiant gave me enough ball motion to strike. It was awesome, and I enjoyed my top 10 handicap/ top 5 scratch finish.

Definitely a must have for your bag.

I had my ball drilled with the pin up above the fingers (20 X 4 ½ X 30). This provides me with a little more length than the Defiant Soul yet still produced a strong midlane roll and a very effective continuous, backend! One noticeable difference with this ball is the way it takes out the corner pins.  Some of my in-between hits that would normally result in a weak 10 pin are being tripped off.  With the added length, I didn’t have to switch ball as often as the heads began to burn out.  I found this ball to be very effective in my PBA Experience league as well as under a typically house shot.

The 74MH coverstock gives me the look and the down lane reaction I am looking for. With this cover I don’t have to worry about the lanes getting burned up.  This ball enabled me to stand just a bit left of between 20-25 and stay in the track. The reaction was controlled with a smooth back-end motion.  This ball gets through the head and maintains its power all night long. What a great addition to my arsenal.

Rotogrip Totally Defiant
PAP-5 over and ½ up
Ball Speed:  15-17mph
Rev Rate: 300-500
Right Handed
Layout: 4x4x2
Surface Preparation:  OTB

What I wanted from this ball:  I wanted more length than my Defiant Soul, But still the hitting power of the Defiant balls.

Result:  Exactly what I expected from this ball.  A pearl version of my Defiant Soul with a mean skip flip reaction.

Compared to the Defiant Soul, this ball allows me to move left and swing the ball out and have the confidence that it will come back.  The cover is strong enough to give me the extreme skid flip backend reaction I wanted and great carry of the corner pins.

I tested this ball on our home wood lanes with our house pattern.  Our house pattern is a pretty tough shot with dryer heads in the middle portion of the lane creating a huge early backend reaction for most and a massive out of bounds from the first arrow out.  There is a small hold area around the 8 board but you cant miss inside or out.

The first set of 3 games on a freshly oiled pair, I was able to stay deep inside and swing the Totally Defiant out to the five board and maintain a skid flip reaction back to the pocket.  The carry was pretty awesome.  This ball allowed me to play a much deeper shot than usual on our house condition.  I moved right of center and played 15 and sent the ball out to 5 and threw much harder and was able to continue hitting the pocket, but I left back row pins due to the drive through the pocket and the sharp angle coming off of our dry boards.  I moved back left and played 20 again and was able to start carrying much better over the next 5-6 games.  I definitely cannot use this ball when the lanes are dry or really hooking, but I am truly glad to have it when I have front end lane oil and want to cover a lot of boards.

To sum this ball up, I am extremely satisfied with the reaction this ball gives me when I have enough oil to get it through the front portion of the lanes.  Once again, I would definitely use this ball for oilier conditions when I want definite backend hook.

Pro Shop Reaction:  A pretty good selling ball so far.  A few of my better bowlers have purchased this ball and love it.  The Totally Defiant also has a great look and gets a lot of compliments on the color scheme.

Recommendations:  I would definitely recommend this ball to anyone wanting a strong backend reaction or wanting to cover a lot of boards.  I would also recommend this ball or someone who may not get a lot on the ball but still wants a strong ball reaction.

Benjamin Goede (Storm/Rotogrip Amateur Staffer)
Ball Weight: 14LBS
PAP: 4 inches over X 1/2 up
Layout: Pin below bridge, mass bias down/to right of the thumb (2 inch), small balance hole 5 over and 3 down

This is my vote for ball of the year!!! This ball has it all.  The shelf appeal is eye catching and is the first ball people notice when they walk into the shop.  Its strength and versatility is unmatched in the Rotogrip line.  In my opinion, this is the strongest ball Rotogrip has made to date.  The continuation is unreal and the pins stay so low.  I have been able to drill this ball for all types of bowlers.  It is worth every penny and I believe it will increase your carry percentage and raise your average immediately!  Im finding this ball will work on most all medium to medium-heavy oil patterns.  Everyone needs a totally defiant in there bag today!

LANE CONDITION

Length:41'

Volume:medium

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): THS

COMMENTS

Strongest and most hooking of any ball in the Defiant line. This ball shows less length than the original but goes longer than Soul on THS. On a fresh pattern, it definitely reads what it sees but as they carry down, it seems to be a little soft at the breakpoint. You can get to the pocket but will have problems getting the corners out. It is a great ball to start the night and the colors get people wondering what you are throwing.
